Gallbladder problems after VSG

Recommended Posts

Who has had gallbladder problems after the sleeve or symptoms? I am experiencing symptoms and have been told it's due to rapid weight loss. Am calling my dr tomorrow to see. Anyone else? I'm 4 months out of surgery and have lost 105 lbs.

I haven't had VSG yet but I did do some research regarding the gallbladder. What I read is that most surgeons prescribe a medication called actigall which helps prevent gallbladder stones/issues after VSG. It seems that a lot of people end up needing the gallbladder removed after VSG. I am going to ask my surgeon the next time I see him if he will prescribe me something to prevent gallbladder attacks/gallstones after surgery. Good luck to you!

I actuality was going to post about this as well. I found out today that i need to get my gallbladder out. I have had no symptoms of having problems but my recent blood work showed that my liver levels were high. So i had to get an ultrasound on the right side of my stomach. ..turns out my gallbladder is full of stones. I know it's not uncommon after wls. I'm just accepting it needs to be done but of course I'm a little worried, mostly cause my heart rate has been low ever since my surgery. Does anyone have advice or what to expect. Thanks and i wish you the best with your surgery as well.

@@Mcgann320 I just had my gallbladder out last week - I am 6 months post-op and 125 down from my highest. I have never ever had GB issues before, the surgeon said it was because of my rapid weight lost. My recommendation is to not wait - I tried to put it off and ended up in hospital with no choice but to have it removed. Best of luck to you, I honestly didn't realize this was a possibility until it happened to me.

I just had mine removed last week just a month and a half after the sleeve. It was very painful and I feel it was a big setback for me . I'm just glad it's over and I want to recover . ????

Yes, rapid weight loss can lead to gall bladder issues. My doctor put me on Actigal for 6 months. I am 7 weeks post op and so far so good. But time will tell. Wishing you the best.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
