Lists of foods and stuff to buy

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am feeling a little overwhelmed (and excited).... so many emotions before the surgery...

I need to figure out what to buy and make before having the surgery.

Do any of you have or know of full / comprehensive lists of foods to make and things to buy for each of the stages? I know it's individual tastes and each stage is different according to surgeons instructions but just wanted a starting point... :-) Would love to know what you all ate when you got home from the hospital and then going forward.

THANKS !!!

Your NUT/surgeon should provide you a list of foods for each phase.

Based on memory so this list might not be complete.

What I used for my first phase, based in my surgeon's program:

ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrate

ProtiDiet Tomato basil and creamy chicken Soups

Premiere Protein RTD

sugar free Popsicles

Bone broth

Sonic crushed ice

Crystal Light

For my second phase all of the above, plus:

GNC Lean shake 25

V8

Cottage cheese

Light and Fit Greek Yogurt

There is a big gastric sleeve book on this site with dietary guidelines and its also online. I can't figure out how to add the link. The first few days after surgery i was on clear liqids: broth. Sf Jello. Clear Protein Drink. Days 4-13 full liquids: add pureed foods and cream Soups, yogurt and pudding along with Water and Protein. Days 14-20 were mushy foods. Add scrambled eggs, tuna salad and ricotta and similar foods along with protein and water. Days 21 soft foods and add regular foods as you tolerate them. Protein first always. Water. And Vitamins. Those were instructions from my surgeon.

MY OPINION IS TO BUY VERY LITTLE. I BOUGHT SO MUCH STUFF AND SPENT QUITE A CHUNK OF MONEY AND ENDED UP WASTING THINGS THAT I COULDN'T STOMACH ETC. I'M NOT PICKY AT ALL SO I NEVER THOUGHT THAT WOULD HAPPEN BUT AFTER SURGERY SOMETIMES THERE ARE THINGS THAT YOU'D RATHER DIE THAN HAVE TO EAT. I THINK I ATE sugar free POSCICLES MORE THAN ANYTHING. BUT Soups, Gelatin, Powerade ZERO, SOME PEOPLE DO pudding, I DID A LOT OF COTTAGE cheese WITH sugar free Syrup IN IT. I WISH I HAD KNOWN RIGHT AFTER SURGERY WHAT I KNOW NOW. I PUT COTTAGE cheese, Peanut Butter, AND vanilla OR PLAIN Protein powder TOGETHER AND MIX IT UP, IT TASTES LIKE Peanut Butter COOKIE DOUGH, MY KIDS ACTUALLY EAT IT, AND I DO THE SAME WITH COTTAGE CHEESE AND chocolate Protein Powder WHICH TASTES LIKE chocolate CAKE BATTER, THAT MIXED WITH A LITTLE MILK WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT HELP TO ME AFTER SURGERY. I BOUGHT THE CLEAR Isopure drinks, HUGE WASTE OF MONEY, I COULD NOT DRINK THEM. REGULAR Protein shakes, PLAIN Protein Powder FOR YOUR SOUPS ETC. ONE WORD OF ADVICE IS TO TRY TO WATCH ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS IN ALL THIS STUFF. I SWEAR TO YOU THAT I WAS NOT USED TO SO MUCH ARTIFICIAL STUFF AND INGESTING SO MUCH OF IT POST OP THREW MY HORMONES AND CHEMICALS OFF SO BAD I THOUGHT I WAS LOSING MY MIND AND I GOT REALLY REALLY SICK. I ATTRIBUTE THAT TO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS....ANYWAY I'LL QUIT RAMBLING... BEST WISHES :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
