Need to get things...moving again. (TMI topic)

Recommended Posts

This is one of those TMI topics but I've seen it posted here before so I thought I'd go ahead and ask. I will be three weeks post op tomorrow and have only had two bowel movements, both of which were over a week ago. I have tried a small dose of laxative, which gave me the urge to go but nothing would come out. I bought some Dulcolax stool softener last night and was able to take one (the dosage is 1-3 caplets) but it made me very nauseated. Am I over thinking this? Is this normal? Maybe I just need to up the dosage? I have been drinking a lot of milk lately for additional Calcium and Protein so today I'm sticking with just Water in hopes that helps a bit.

I read about this on all the other topics but didn't quite find the answer I was looking for. I'm just wondering if I should stick with the stool softener for a while longer or if I should go ahead and call the doctor. This is the only surgery I've ever had so I'm not sure what the "norm" is. My doctor and nut didn't give me any pre-op advice on the topic either.

Just wanted to get some advice from the veterans. Thanks in advance!

Call the doctor and get his advice. He may want you to continue the ducolax or he may prescribe a stool softener for you. If he has no suggestions then try some of the things mentioned in the various threads on this topic.

@@Whitney1968 I forgot to mention I've had two doses of Miralax. The laxatives are all working. They give me the urge to go, it's just nothing comes out. I'm hoping a few more days on the stool softener will work.

@ I was like you and still am some times. I am 3 months post op and sometimes it's like nothing coming out. BUT, yesterday and today, I finally took a good, hearty poop since my surgery. I'm sorry, TMI, but I kept waiting and waiting for months for it to happen I had to tell someone. LOL

Where ya from, Southern Sleever?

@@Whitney1968 haha that makes me feel better :) I am a natural worrier so I'm not sure if I'm overthinking this whole thing or if I should really be worried. My mom made it sound like I was going to die. She told me to get some medical gloves and pull it out. Um, no. Not happening.

Anyway, I'm from Alabama :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
