Pre- Op Weight Loss Question

Recommended Posts

I am a little frustrated. So in August I started my Sleeve journey with my first Pre-Op appointment where they weighed me, measured me, went over history etc. At this point I was 264 lbs.

I was told for insurance I would need to do a 3 month supervised diet with a doctor and lose weight during that time-- it didn't matter how much. So in early September I met with the dietitian at the center and was 268. I told her that I was ready to lose some weight and meet the insurance goal of at least losing weight in three months (I had to putting on weight like crazy the months before). I weight in again for a monthly appt. in early October and weight 267-- not great, but I did lose a pound. The dietitian looked at me and said I will see you for your last appt. in early November and remember you have to be lower than 264 to qualify for insurance. What? that is only two months dietitian supervised diet and when working with the dietitian I was 268, so shouldn't I be lower than that? She said no and that it is the date and weight I started working with the center. I had no idea.

So I have been struggling to lose weight and due to something unknown I have seen increases of a 1 lb a day with eating very little. So I am at about 268 now and need to be under 264 in three weeks. I just don't know if I can do it. Anyone find themselves in a similar situation where you had to really work to lose weight at the end of qualify for insurance? What did you do?

I was initially worried about losing too much and dipping below the required 40 BMI, but that isn't even a concern anymore.

My doctor required a two week pre-op diet for me. I had 3 Protein shakes and one Soup a day. Stayed away from high-fat and creamy Soups. I lost over 20 lbs during that time. Maybe you could try something like that?

Sounds like they're using your weight from your pre op appt that you mentioned at the beginning, so if you're over that, it'll count as a gain. Some insurances will deny you for a gain, no matter how small.

My pre op weight was 244, and this was taken before I started the six months of weigh in's. That's the weight I was expected to lose 10% of.

The good news is it's not a huge amount of weight to lose in the time you have left. I'd just concentrate on getting to or under the 264.

Certainly not healthy but a 7 day total body cleanse (under $30 at GNC) will rapidly drop several pounds.

I lost weight while still struggling with the liquid diet. I had 3 Protein Shakes daily while eating crap in small portions. I lost a few lbs a week. If you are gaining while dieting you may not be getting enough calories or Water.

I had a dietician tell me once that I was hold a lot of Water (and I was drinking lots of water to flush my system as well) and she had me take one day where I ate only apples and a 6 oz steak with very little water on that day. The next day I resumed drinking my 64 oz water and dropped 6 lbs in water weight by the end of the day. Part of my prob was too much sodium so I have to constantly remind myself to tone it down (I've been know to be a bit of a salt addict which I am certain led to high blood pressure in combination with the excess weight). Check with your nutritionist to see if this might be an option for you.

3 weeks to lose 4 pounds ?

You can easily lose this and much more.

Did they give you a diet to follow ?

If not, then as folks have suggested above there are ways to drop off weight really fast. The pre-op diet many of us followed dropped off a pound per day. It works due to calorie deficit and ketosis.

You've got plenty of time to lose the weight. You can do this with great success.

Thank you for sharing this, salt does hold water and I love chips and cheese w/salsa..

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
