What is this weird spot near my port scar?

Recommended Posts

I prolly should have posted this in complications, but this area gets more traffic. Has anyone seen something like this?? I've posted a picture of my port scar....and next to it is a light brown area. I have no idea what this is. It's not a bruise, it doesn't hurt in any way, and it's shown up in the last 48 hours or so....getting darker and a bit larger as time ticks away.

The only thing I can think of is that it's the Omnipaque leaking out of the port?? But it shouldn't be leaving that mark....the stuff is eliminated from your system within a few hours. It's freaking me out!! I'll email this to Dr. Spivak tomorrow to see if I can avoid a trip downtown for him to look at it. Maybe he'll recognize it right away. :cry

I read the link you supplied since I'm not super familiar with the product and it does have a form of iodine in it so I can see how it could stain your skin.

But why would you have it there? Do you have a leak that you are aware of? Could your doc have missed the port? Did you see a leak on the fluoro?

Well, I had the fill on June 24 so I would think it would have shown up before now. (?) She did have to shoot twice to hit the port. I don't have a leak that I'm aware of, but the 1st saline fill sure did go away. Second one was with omnipaque and it held.

I could be wrong because I've only seen Omnipaque once and it was through a vial, but isn't that stuff a bit thicker than Water? If so, couldn't a leak be slower to show up?

If she had to hit twice to get the port, do you know if she injected anything the first time?

Do you know if she attempted to withdraw any Fluid to make sure she was in the port? Some do withdraw and some don't, some want to verify the Fluid went IN the port and others don't want to cause additional trauma and swelling by opening/closing the band.

I wish I had a better answer for you but all I can do is throw out thoughts.

I think I'll ask for a little tattoo by my port... so they don't have to stick sev. times to find it... : )

Let us know what the dr. has to say!

HA! I might have said the same thing in the beginning but I have since learned that when you lose weight everything inside appears to "condense" and it MOVES.

Otherwise, that would be a heck of an idea!

Oh, believe me....I appreciate your thoughts!! It makes sense to me that it's the Omnipaque....I just hope that it isn't the kind of leak that requires a new band!! I would not be happy about that!

Thanks for your time!

If it is a port leak you'd only need a new port, not a new band. But some docs are using extra thick stuff (like Fix A Flat) to fix a leak.

Thanks, Lynn. The nurse was mystified. She asked me to come in on Thursday (Dr. Spivak is on vacation 'til then). So I"ll report back after my visit with him.

I'm not worried!....I think at worst it's a leak of the omnipaque flluid or she missed with the injection...something like that. ya'll rest easy! I may not even be able to get over there today. It's a 1.5 hr round trip and I'm pretty busy at work right now. I have to play it by ear and see what is happening around lunchtime. All is well!

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
