Book recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone - I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for books related to nutrition, metabolism, the gastric sleeve afterlife and such.

I have read a few books that were very helpful, some that were so so and others that were a snooze. Here's what I've read:

1) The Emotional First Aid Kit - A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery (very good for pre and post-op. Gave me a good reality check before I had surgery)

2) Ultimate Gastric Sleeve Success by Dr. Duc Vuong (also very good, written by a bariatric surgeon. Explains the surgery, what you need to do in the immediate aftermath and beyond. Lots of quizzes so avoid if you don't like those. Good for pre-op)

3)Weight Loss Surgery The Real Skinny by Dr. Nick Nicholson (easy read, very encouraging. Good for pre-op)

4) The Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients (a bit boring, basic information that you can get elsewhere)

5) A Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner (super book about food and how your body metabolizes it, how obesity happens and helpful guidelines for eating. Good for pre and post op and in general).

I was trying to get through Robert Lustig's "Fat Chance" but I think I'll have to circle back at a later date. If anyone has any rec's I'd really appreciate them. Thanks.

The support group I go to recommended Straight talk from a post op and a doc, pretty good and now reading Losing It by Anne Andrews, seems OK, and Skinny Jeans at last, have not read yet.

Overeaters Annonymous is the best book I have read to prepare me for WLS.

Everything else you can get from google searches, youtube videos from Drs and Bariatric centers, and your own program if it is a good one.

Having the right frame of mind about food is the most important thing before surgery, it makes everything easier.

I would not have been nearly as successful as I've been without reading When food is Love by Geneen Roth. It completely changed my perspective on so much regarding food. In fact in the 2 years since surgery I've read it 3 times. Each time I keep a journal & learn something new

I hate to say this on this forum in particular (sorry Alex!), but I thought the big book on gastric sleeve was a waste of money. If you've already done a decent amount of research on the surgery, you won't get much else out of it. Plus, they need a new editor/proofreader! Typos all over, a graphic of a gastric bypass captioned with a description of gastric sleeve... I don't know, some people love it, but it didn't do anything for me, and the errors drove me crazy.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
