Joints ache

Recommended Posts

Suddenly both of my hip joints are hurting. I am walking about 40 minutes a day now, but I didn't figure that this would be a side effect ????. Anyway, my question is: can I take Aleve? I remember being told something about not doing it but I thought maybe that was just in those first weeks after surgery. I have no issues with pills in general so that isn't a problem.

You're probably hurting from the new exercise routine and your own body adjusting to losing weight. We are supposed to stay away from Aleve and other NSAIDS...they are a definite no no because of an increased risk of gastric ulcers. This is forever, not just for the first few weeks.

My doc has me off all Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs and many WLS patients are told not to take them due to the potential to ulcerate the stomach lining. I had a shoulder problem and got permission to take them for a couple of weeks, but it's not allowed routinely. There may be other things you can do- have you asked your doc for a referral to physical therapy? Maybe they can help you build up strength?be sure to let your WLS doc know about your hips and joints.????

I did not receive the same information about NSAIDs from my surgeon with the sleeve.

Make sure you check with your surgeon about this.

I suffered through alot of aches and pains as i was losing. I was told that it is a big adjustment... balance and everything is different when you used to be a very round apple and turning into a peach (or whatever is cuter than an apple!).

Anyway, I think it is normal and I would ask for surgeon advice on pain reliever. I tend to just deal with it.

I do have some sad news to share, that hopefully doesn't apply to you. About 2 years after getting to goal I started having persistant right hip pain. Bottom line, arthritis from all those years obese. I will need a replacement in 3-5 years, but in the meantime staying active and enjoying life... with the help of joint injections!

I am so sorry to hear that. Good news is they have gotten very good at hip replacements. My Friend was just in his late forties when he had his done and it made a world of difference. He even went back to bowling with us. ???? that being said, I hope you don't have to do it before you are ready.

This is encouraging to hear. I hope this goes away soon. I am beginning to feel A little decrepit. Feels almost like the fat was holding everything together and now all the joints are just loosey-goosey.

Pre-op I had arthritis in my left knee from a torn meniscus while skiing. I actually developed arthritis in my right knee after surgery. The good news is I've caught both instances early enough that the doctor says as long as I am staying active and keep losing knee replacements are off the table.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
