Is dumping syndrome forever?

Recommended Posts

My nutritionist said that the length of time people experience dumping is individual--some people have it forever, some have it for awhile, and some never get it. My surgeon said that dumping syndrome is only caused by high sugar foods, like cake and ice cream (although nutritionist said high fat salad dressings can do it too). I've read stories on here of people dumping on other stuff you wouldn't expect, but I have to wonder how much of that is truly dumping syndrome (the kind where you feel like you're dying) and how much is a different bad reaction or indigestion. I'm 1mo out and I haven't tried anything that's supposed to make you dump. I'd rather not know and keep that tool strong!

Does sugar free cause dumping?

It is not expected to cause dumping but that doesn't mean that sugar free doesn't have sugar alcohols and those have been known to cause dumping.

I drink sugar free drinks, eat sugar free puddings, popscicles, Jell-O, some ice creams and yogurts; I have never experienced dumping.

And to be fair I've had a few items (very little) that had plain ol' white sugar. No issues. Everyone is different.

I am 2.5 years out. I avoid sweets, ice cream, cakes. I can eat a very small amount of sugar free items but too much and I will be sick. I also have avoided all deep fried items as my doc said that would be a problem. Just eat a few bites and then stop and see if you are ok after 10-15 minutes. That works for me. But don't fret over it. You will figure it out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
