Does WLS effect our metabolism?

Recommended Posts

Yes, I believe I'm in the dreaded three week stall, so I'm putting that out there. I'm frustrated. But really, I am eating very little and I feel like if I ate what I am eating now before I had the surgery, I'd be losing weight pound over pound. Now, I'm staying the same day after day.

My husband is eating low carb and the weight is falling off of him. I'm eating low carb and very little calories and it's just sticking to me.

I know people will tell me the weight will come off, but I'm so frustrated right now because I'm dealing with the side effects of surgery (terrible potty issues) and not seeing any of the good things to come of it yet. I lost 10 lbs on the pre-op diet and 10 lbs since surgery, but only when I was on the liquid diet. Once I added real food, even this little amount, the weight loss stopped immediately. If I was going to stay fat, I would have been happier being fat and able to eat and potty. ;)

If you don't eat enough your metabolism will crash. It's your bodies natural "survival mode" tactics to keep you from starving to death. Your body will hold onto and store whatever fat it can get. It happens to me a lot when I don't eat much then I will eat something high in fat and calories and by the next day I've dropped a few lbs. you need to kick start your metabolism back up....and poop, you need to poop.

Keep moving and eating. Stick to the plan, the weight loss will happen. Your body is adjusting. No WLS doesn't seem to affect your metabolism by itself, it's the change in your diet.

Great special on how dieting affects you.

1. Men lose faster than women. In fact you can't compare yourself to anybody because there are far too many variables that go into how fast/slow someone does or doesn't lose weight. Sex, age, health issues, just to name a few.

2. Eat some complex carbs. The Fiber will help with your potty issues and I assure you, it won't slow down your weight loss. A tsp of wheat germ, flax powder or psylium powder in your yogurt, some dark green leafy veg, even Beans will help with the potty issue.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
