Hunger Pains One Week After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I am only one week out from my surgery and I have been having hunger pains since day 5. The first couple of days I wasn't hungry at all then all of a sudden I feel like I am starving. I am following the doctor's diet progression and making sure I am getting enough Protein and fluids as well as keeping my portion sizes where they suggest, but I am still super hungry. I have even lost 4 lbs since surgery.

I wrote my doctor's office 2 days ago about this issue and they called me yesterday. The nurse said that no one had ever said that they were having hunger pains and that it is all in my head. I freaking know what hunger pains feel like, ok. This is not in my head. In fact, I just ate a little over an hour ago and I am already hungry!

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Jenni, Yes I have as well and its not in your head they are real and I know how hard it is for you. I started eating solids 10 days after and i think that was a mistake feeling a pain in the centre of my chest but its not unabareable and I'm worried I may have done something to my band, so I think Ill return to fluids and mush for a while and hope all is ok. There is a reason that we have to resist ourselves I believe now.

I drank cuppa Soups Tomato, cream of chicken etc... also fresh fruit juices that seemed to help me a bit. with the hunger pains Also sugar free sweets After surgery I couldn't handle the Protein drinks at all, the thought of them made me gag.

Hope all goes well for you and you can get through this.

I am 5-days post-op and was so excited to not have any hunger... until tonight. Good grief, I don't think I've ever been this hungry in my life. My stomach is growling, which is certainly not in my head either! Trying another Protein Drink to (hopefully) settle it down.

Hi everyone! I was banded on November 24. I wasn't very hungry the first 5 or so days. Now I'm a week and 2 days post op and I'm STARVING!!! I called my doctor's office today to ask if I might go ahead and try some puréed foods but was shut down. They said I still had a few more days to go before I was a full 2 weeks out and to wait. Grrrrrrr. How bad would it really be to just have some really really mushy mashed potatoes or oatmeal? ???

I was hungrier the day I came home tom the hospital. One day post op. The next day less hungry as today. I have to drink my Protein Shake for lunch or I won't get it in yesterday I didn't get my Protein shake in. Still on full liquids. Cream of wheat, cream Soups, instant mashed potatoes before before bed. Drinking skim milk with each meal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
