Pain in back of throat

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, thought I would finally post this question since the issue has not resolved itself as I was hoping it might.

Did anyone else experience pain in the throat after surgery? It is hard to describe what I am feeling but I will try.

I am 9 weeks post-op and have felt this pain in the back of my throat ever since surgery, especially when I lay on my back. When I go to bed at night and am lying on my back I can feel it. If I breathe deeply the pain intensifies. I had a bad experince a couple of weeks ago when I went for a massage. I started out on my stomach and everything was fine but when I turned onto my back, the pain in my throat was very bad and I immediately got very nauseous. I sat up immediately and managed to control the urge to spew everywhere.

I have been discussing this with my surgeon and he has never heard of this but is still working on figuring it out. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Thanks for listening.

do you think it could be from being intubated during surgery? is your voice the same. Is it getting worse, better or no change? the reason i ask is that two times since my surgery, i have had food get caught in back of my throat...like a big lump. I have no idea why that is?... it hurts for a brief period until the food goes down. ...in my throat, not even close to my band...go figure, i swear it is always something!!

Hi, thanks for your replies. No, I don't think it's from the tube. I discussed that with my doctor and it is unlikely that it would still be bothering me over 2 months after surgery.

I had a fill at 6 weeks post-op and actually the pain kind of got better for about 3 days then it returned with a vegence.

I've noticed the pain is always kind of there whether I'm standing, sitting, lying on my side or whatever and unless I have to breathe very deeply it is not terribly noticebale. However, my biggest problem is that the pain gets very severe whenever I lie down on my back. It so bad a times that I really don't think I would be able to get dental work done or anything that requires me to be in a reclined or flat-on-my-back position.

It's really amazing how many things require one to be on their back. It's been a real pain - literally. Hope someone, anyone can help me figure this out.

I'm scheduled for a chest x-ray and ultrasound and am waiting to get in for a CT scan.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated!

Desperately seeking answers....

JLB...

Would you describe the pain? Is it like a sore throat when you have a cold? Is it a sharp pain like someone is stabbing you? Is it an ache like a headache type pain?

If it was esophageal I would think the pain would be worse with a fill, not better. I'm really stumped on this one.

Please let us know what your test shows up. I have been having something wierd going on with my throat/neck since December. None of the Drs can figure it out so far. I have had a lot of tests and nothing. Mine is not painful thank god. But it is a constant feeling like there is something in the left side of my neck pushing on my esophagus. I know it is very annoying when you dont know what is going on with your body. Just keep in touch and I hope they find out what your problem is soon.

Hi Was, overall the pain is an ache like a headache but when I lie down on my back at night it is like a sharp knife pain. If I turn over on my side or sit up it usually shuts it off. It's very weird and very irritating.

Any ideas are very much appreciated. We're all just shooting in the dark at this point.

Have you had your thyroid tested? That happens a lot when people start forming nodules or a goiter. It's an annoying feeling and sometimes people feel like if they swallow something huge it will fix it. It won't, but it feels like it would. Sometimes people get a change in their voice and they sound like Mr. T eventually. It happens a lot with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. A thyroid ultrasound would diagnose it if that is the problem.

Thyroid or a strange esophageal spasm is about all I could think of, I'm sorry I can't be of anymore help. I'll keep thinking, though.

Funny you should mention thyroid. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease about 25 years ago and have been on synthroid for most of that time.

Esophageal spasm is another possibililty, I'll mention that to my doctor.

Thanks,

Thought I would update everyone. I went for my ultrasound and chest x-ray and the results were normal. I have my CT scan scheduled for Monday.

I'm also going to go for my 2nd fill on Monday afternoon. I'm curious to see if the pain changes after the 2nd fill like it did after the 1st fill.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
