Pre-op Liquid Diet - Anyone have this?

Recommended Posts

First, let me say this is very hard to type, but I am glad I have this forum to come and ask questions like this. I'm sorry if this is TMI (too much information), but that is a warning right there to stop reading if you are squeamish. I have severe diarrhea with the Pre-Op diet. I'm losing a ton of weight and staying hydrated as best I can but it is really taking a toll, I'm so tired of it. Did anyone else experience this with your liquid diet? I read in the Post-op diets a lot of people having this issue, but just wondered if anyone experiencing it just from the Protein Shakes. I have tried lactose free, lactose pills, all vegan plant based Protein, nothing is helping. Thanks for your help and advice

I wish surgeons would stop doing the liquid pre-op. my surgeon doesn't require it. He said 2 weeks before the surgery I'll be put on a low carb-high Protein diet. And it produces the same results that a liquid diet would.

I don't think severe diarrhea is normal. Try calling the surgeon to see what he/she suggests. Make sure you drink as much Fluid as possible since you are losing electrolytes because of the diarrhea.

I didn't have a pre-op diet at all. I was warned by my doctor to eat high Protein and keep my calories low because if my liver was too fatty he would close up right there on the table. However I didn't have a specific pre-op diet other than the usual all clears/NPO after 9pm. Call your doctor and explain the difficulties you are having. Maybe he can come up with some else for you.

@@Lexigurl82 Thank you so much for your caring words. I was so worried putting it all out there like that, that nobody would respond. I don't think it's normal either. Calling the surgeon tomorrow.

When I was doing the shakes before pre op I was using 2%milk. After about an hour I would have to go to the bathroom. I thought maybe just maybe it was too much dairy. Not that Im lactose intolerant but I thought that might be a factor. So I picked up some almond milk and that instantly solved the problem. So maybe try using sugar free almond milk. I used vanilla and chocolate. I also always added frozen mixed berries or strawberries, tropical fruit mix instead of ice.

I am 4 days post op. Looking forward to starting shakes tomorrow. If you haven't had surgery yet, my biggest suggestion is make sure you can rest and you have some help, prepare meals for your family, arrange rides for kids etc. Your upper abdomen will be sore from the incisions. so coughing and sneezing are a bit tough. But its tolerable. Whats not tolerable, is unfortunately getting my period which decided to show its ugly head the day after surgery and its always excruciating and painful cramps, because I have fibroid tumors. (haven't had it since August)

Other than that, the trick is to sip, sip sip. You will feel a bit of pressure when the food enters the stomach, Im told this is because Im still swollen. So grab some good books movies magazines, set up camp so you don't have to keep getting up and down. I keep a small cooler next to me with drinks a spoon, my one ounce cups. And Remember to take your walks to get the gas out.

@@LMolina1987 Thanks LMolina1987! I can have broth, I just took some Immodium, (wondering why I didn't do that right away- duh). I am still calling the doc tomorrow to tell them what is going on and see if they have any other suggestions. Thanks for all your advice and help, super grateful to you all!

I'm so glad someone was brave enough to put this out there. I have been on my preop liquid diet for 10 days now and I started getting loose stools yesterday. I googled it and read that it's common for a liquid diet. However I wouldn't describe my case as severe and would definitely recommend that you call the doctor.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
