Hey everyone! I had surgery Tuesday morning and it hasn't really hit me yet that I now have the sleeve. Has anyone else shared the same feeling? The first day after surgery was a little rough. Threw up some in recovery and in my room but I think I was trying to drink too much. Yesterday was much better and today even better. I'm still struggling with that uncomfortable feeling when I drink something and I'm walking as much as I can to eliminate the gas. Gas is the worst! Still have no idea how I'm going to drink 64 oz of liquids including at least 60 g of Protein. Any suggestions? Open to anything. Thanks in advance!

Welcome home. Breathing exercises and walking help with the burping and gas. Gas X strips too!

I did not hit those liquid and Protein levels the first days home. I tried and noticed my urine was brownish showing some dehydration, but as the days went on, I could drink more and chose only clear Protein Isopure with some broth with added powdered, unflavored Isopure.

Just do what you can those first days home, don't push it. After day 4 home, moving to Protein drinks and other non-Clear liquids like low sodium Soups, yogurts, cream of wheat, will help.

Good luck!

thanks! Maybe I'm putting too much pressure on myself. I just don't want to get dehydrated. I will just try to take it one day at a time I guess,

My dr told me that in the first few days you probably won't get your 64 oz of Water in since your stomach is swollen and even smaller. Just start with small sips and see how it goes. Don't push yourself. You will eventually get your Water in

if you think you're going to get dehydrated try some Gatorade/Powerade too. They have low calorie ones that are pretty tasty

I got a 64 oz plastic bottle on Amazon, it was under $10. I would fill it with Water in the morning, and that way I could see how much I had and how much I had left.

Since I can really only tolerate Water when it's ice cold what I actually do is before bed I fill it 3/4 and stick it in the freezer. By morning it's solid. Then I fill it the rest of the way with cold water and I have ice cold water most of the day

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
