Pain Following Surgery

Recommended Posts

I need straight information about how painful the procedure is. I have a fairly high tolerance for pain, having csection and gall bladder surgery and only taking Tylenol #3 following both. Need some comparisons.

I have to stress that everyone is different. But my bypass was the first operation I've ever had, and I'm 54. And it ended up being so much easier than I ever imagined.

My only real pain, and it was very minimal, was from my drain. And that was well taken care of by my pain pump. I was up and walking within hours of my surgery. The drain was removed the day of discharge.

I had arranged to stay with family for a week, as I live alone. I stayed there one night, slept in a bed, didn't need a recliner, and drove myself home the next morning. I honestly felt that good. Had arranged for my dogs to be cared for out of house as I was concerned they would jump on me. Got them back the very next day.

Didn't need the at home pain meds. The only downside for me was I was very tired, and I did take a lot of naps. I took a full six weeks off, to heal and adjust. But if I'd been forced to, I could have gone back in a week.

Sometimes I wondered if they really operated on me, I felt so good. But at 11 weeks the weight is definitely coming off, so now I'm sure! ????

Hope you both have as easy a time. Good luck!

Thank you both for your encouraging responses!!!!! I've had gallbladder surgery, fistula repair and csection. All 3 were a breeze. Not sure why I am so concerned about this procedure.

I have had a lot of surgeries in my life. Hysterectomy, open gall bladder, 5 spinal surgeries, tonsils, neurostimulator implant.

Honestly this surgery was ver easy for me, as easy as my open gallbladder and hysterectomy. I do have a high tolerance for pain but the real discomfort was the bloated feeling from the gas.

I did not sleep that first night because of that gassy bloated feeling which can be uncomfortable. The best thing to do is get up and walk.

I got home from the hospital on wed and took my last dose of pain medication Thursday night. Honestly it doesn't help the gas pain anyway.

This surgery was pretty easy for me. I'm 5 days post op and feel amazing! I had surgery on Monday Oct 12th and was discharged the next day. The day of surgery I saw up and walking a couple of hours after surgery. My stomach felt sore, like I did 1000 sit ups. The pain I endured was from the gas they pumped me with. That was most uncomfortable part of recovery. On Tues I was discharged, came home and only needed to one dose of Tylenol. I walked and walked to help with the gas pain. The gas pain was horrid, even the burping would hurt. By day 4 I was feeling much better.

I'm able to walk easily, the soreness in my stomach is barely there. Showering was great, I used a shower chair to prevent me falling. I sleep in a power recliner, but I'm able to sit up and down easily in my couch.

It will be very similar to your gallbladder removal surgery in terms of pain. Less painful on your outer body than a C-section for more painful on your inner body because of the gas pains associated with the laparoscopic surgery. If you could handle a C-section without having narcotics the surgery is going to be a walk in the park for you

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
