Food has lost its grip on me

Recommended Posts

I realized something today. In the past (aka, "before surgery"), I would look forward to meals. Like, "oh yum, we're having ribs tonight, I can't wait!!!"

I noticed that I don't do that, or think that, anymore. My mother moved in with me a couple of years ago, and she makes dinner every night (it's so awesome). She texted me earlier today to see if I was working late, and said "it's meatloaf night." In the past, meatloaf-night meant a happy dance. Today, it was more like, "oh that's nice."

OH. THAT'S. NICE.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Who in the blue blazes thought "oh that's nice." WHO?????

Me, that's who. It seems that food has lost its hold on me. It's a completely strange feeling. Like an alien has taken over me.

Umm, that is what my therapist would call sort of a break through moment. This should not be glossed over, but instead analyzed, and celebrated if warranted. HINT - Long term you want to know where the feelings came from originally and what made the change. IMHO.

That made me laugh out loud because I totally know where you're coming from!

"Wanna go to a movie?"

Why yes I do!!! Don't care which one because I'm not actually going to the movie for the movie... I'm going because of MOVIE POPCORN! (with a little bit of butter in the middle and a little bit on top)

I thought for sure it would KILL ME to go to a movie and smell my most favorite treat in the whole wide world... but it didnt. Not sure if that is the whole "change of smells after surgery thing" or that my mind has let go and I've gone awhile without (yummy) bad food and the cravings are on the down low.

Either way I'm happy and I know that some day I'll have movie popcorn again but when I go to a movie - it's for the entertainment and not a binge-in-plain-sight-but-its-dark-so-nobody-sees-me kind of outing.

I have noticed this a lot lately!! lunch and dinner seem more of a chore than anything. If it wasn't for my home daycare, I would probably just eat a cheese stick and a few pieces of lunch meat. I feel bad for my two kiddos (14,16) because my hubby works a second job and I hardly fix dinner anymore. They have to find something because they don't like to skip a meal but my Protein Shake fills me up.

Well done, Sharon.

You have arrived.

If we never reach that point then no amount of surgery will help.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
