I could have sworn I saw a post this morning about post-sleeve diabetes management. When I got to my office to post something, it was gone. So, I thought I'd start a thread - would love to hear from other diabetics in the group.

Before my sleeve surgery, I was on 1.8 mcg of victoza, 2000 mg of metformin, 60 units of lantus and 60+ (sliding scale) of apidra daily. My surgeon reduced my meds immediately after surgery - no victoza, half the metformin and 10 units of each of the insulins. Unfortunately my blood sugars, particularly my fasting sugars, were not where I wanted them after I began solid food, so I consulted with my GP and we went back to 2000 mg of metformin (less chance of hypo), 25 units of lantus and 5-10 units of apidra. That's just freaking amazing. We also developed a plan to begin backing me off the medicines as the blood sugars come down.

Both my surgeon and GP agree that if all continues to go well, I should be off the meds in a few months. I'm limiting myself to around 30 grams of carbs a day (my surgeon's plan allows for 60) and getting daily exercise.

So, how's everyone else doing? Anyone off meds altogether?

CJ

I have herd great thing from other type two's that they are off medication. I am a type one. I hardly ever use insulin. Its been months since I've used it. Amazing what the surgery does for so many of us. So thankful to get my health back.

ME, ME, ME

my PCP told me to stop diabetes meds right after surgery

my A1C (right word???, frequently say it wrong)

for the past 4 years fluctuates between 4.5 - 4.9!!!!!

wonderful feeling not taking meds

this was "my situation"

your docs plan sounds great about reducing your meds

till eventually being off all meds

that's great!!

"stories" concerning diabetes/meds will vary

that's ok - the one thing we all have in common is that we're all different!!

good luck

kathy

Diabetes management is amazing after surgery but not all are cleared by surgery or weight loss.

For me, I was told to stop all meds (non-insulin dependent Type 2) day of surgery. Blood sugar has been stable for the 5 months since.

I am, also in the normal cholesterol range and came off those meds at 3 months out. On a half dose of hbp med and soon to be off it as well.

This is an amazing opportunity and the reason I did the surgery to be more healthy and that is definitely working!!

Well I got to ditch my diabetes meds, blood pressure meds, and cholesterol meds. The only medications I take now are the ones I got post op for ulcers and gallstones and that is it. What a wonderful thing to be health and free of all those medications.

I was on Metformin 1000 mg, Byetta and glipizide. My endocrinologist took me off everything as of the day of the surgery, with a meeting scheduled for 3 weeks post surgery to discuss my finger sticks.

They were so good, she left me off everything pending my A1c test 3 months post surgery. With no meds, my A1c was 6.1.

Prior to starting the program, my A1c was over 11. Just prior to surgery, it was just under 8.

Needless to say, I am very happy!

My husband was on a similar dose of Victoza and Lantus, with a sliding scale of something else (I can't remember the name now), plus 1000 mg of Metformin prior to his surgery. His blood sugar was slightly high in the hospital immediately after surgery and they gave him an insulin injection that afternoon. He hasn't had any other injections at all since the day of surgery. He stopped the Metformin within 2 weeks of surgery and now is off all meds completely. In addition to the diabetes meds, he's also off his cholesterol and blood pressure meds. The only script he takes now is Omeprazole, because he does still have a tendency to produce too much acid.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
