I'm 14 days post op and still have diabetes.

I really thought it would be gone by now but dr says go back on insulin. Did anyone else not lose their diabetes after surgery?

Hi, my names Tina and had gastric bypass specifically to lose the diabetes and it's still there but very near normal, my glucose monitor numbers are 115-130 , my Dr. does not have me on any diabetes meds as of right now, and says as the weight comes off, the diabetes will be less and less, so I've lost 30 pounds as of this writing, and everything is looking better. SO DONT LOSE HOPE! EAT HOW AND WHAT YOUR SUPPOSE TO, Listen to your surgeon for every stage of this surgery, and stay positive about your outcome!

Could be dependent on how long you've been diabetic, and the quantity of insulin you were taking pre-op.

I've mentioned in other threads that I've been diabetic for about 12 years give or take, and the amount of Levemir and Novolog I was taking was rather astronomical. Post-op, I do still have to take insulin, but it's very little especially compared to what I was taking before. I just met with my endo last Friday, and he thinks by next Spring (about 8-9 months post-op) I could be completely off the insulin as I lose more weight. However, there is still a small chance that I will have to continue to take small quantities of insulin the rest of my life.

Be patient and have faith.

Thanks Tina. My numbers are still in the 200s and I am just hoping after I lose a bunch away it'll go away permanently. Thank you so much for your encouragement!

Yeah I was a diabetic since 2006 and I was taking 85 units at night. I was hoping for a miracle was just completely devastated when it didn't work for me. I'll keep the faith and keep a good outlook thanks so much for your reply

14 days is a bit early to give up.

I have been a diabetic for 18 years and I was on an insulin pump, taking approx. 75 units of insulin a day.

I am now 2 months post-gastric bipass and now taking 32 u of Lantus in the morning.

I try to walk a minimum of 1 hr a day and I have lost 32 lbs.

It is not a miracle surgery but you can be certain that if you start exercising a bit, losing weight, you will not need that large of an amount.

Good luck.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
