My surgery was yesterday. Is it normal to hurt so bad everytime you move? If I cough it feels like my inside are going to explode. I'm afraid that I am going to make the band slip or my port flip. Is this normal?

Welcome to bandland!

I was very sore to right after surgery and for a couple days afterwards. Holding a pillow to your stomach helps with coughing. It doesn't hurt as much. It is normal to wonder if you are going to slip your band but you are going to be fine. Just take your time drinking water/protein shakes and move around some. I also found that laying flat (I was on a recliner) with an ice pack to my stomach helped. You will get through it. :o

My own surgery was Wednesday and I was told by everyone, docters and nurses alike that if I was in pain, that I needed to take my pain meds! Like they told me, there's no reason for you to be in pain at all! Depending on what they gave you it could make you drowsy but at least while you're sleeping you will healing.

Putting a pillow to your chest when you cough definitly does help! Also make sure to do your breathing exercises, inbetween commercials, everytime you wake up in the middle of the night. The more you do them the better you will feel! I've also been told the coughing is actually good for you because it helps clear your lungs of the moisture.

I hope this helps and you start feeling better. I'm not much farther along then you are and I am already starting to feel "normal" I'm sure you won't be far behinde! :clap2:

No worries, guys, it gets better. Just take it easy and walk a lot. I can't stress ENOUGH how important walking really is. It makes you feel SO much better, too.

Oh! To help the sipping and not gulping part....try using toddler sippy cups. It kinda helps not put so much in.

I am so with you. I feed like an old woman. Sitting and walking are not too bad, but geting up an down (specifically up from bed) can be slow and painful. I walked a total of about a mile yesterday. I feel like my gas is in control. Now to work on the abdominal soreness and sore throat from the breathing tube. Good thing I know that this tool will be soooo worth it. On the other side I am not hungry and have to set a timer to get all my Protein Drinks in. It feels so good not to be driven by hunger:whoo:

Does anyone feel like their insides are ripping apart when they get up and down? I try to be careful but there is only so much you can do.

Georgigirl. Yes, yes, yes. I felt so bad up to the fourth day. The coughing was the worse for me. I am three weeks out and the coughing is still once or twice a day. But everything feels okay. The moving around is good though, helps heal faster. I sucked on sugar free cough drops

I was having a hard time with the up and down stuff too...what worked pretty well for me, just for sit to stand was a cane, just helped to make things a little more gradual, and lets you use your arms instead of those oh so sore abs! was able to ditch it after about the fifth day! So best to borrow one if you can! Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
