Alex Brecher 10,515 Posted October 17, 2015 Like the others said, I’d think first about a lack of carbs. If you’re down below about 25 grams per day, which is very likely after the sleeve, your brain can get a little fuzzy. That’s because your brain uses sugar for energy, and you’re not giving enough carbs. A nutrient deficiency is possible, too. Are you taking all the recommended supplements your surgeon gave you? And finally…what about dehydration? I think they suggest 64 ounces minimum, but more is better. Good luck!
Jessica Radcliff 51 Posted October 18, 2015 My dr said its the brain detoxing off all the bad food and sugars we are before and that it'll slowly start working as it gets use to new food intake levels

her1981 448 Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) I was doing some research about my anemia and Iron deficiency and read that it causes decreased mental function, so i may have 2 things at play. I do feel better mentally since I've started taking the iron supplement, so maybe that's it. Edited October 20, 2015 by her1981
bikrchk 1,313 Posted October 29, 2015 Pre-op, while I was just crazy to get it done and wouldn't think about anything else, Yes! Post op as well, for about the first 6 months. Then an amazing thing happened. Several months in, I learned how to FEED myself. A diet with as many calories as my weight loss would bear, (aimed at about 1200 per day) with 90G of Protein and regular exercise. By about 6 months out, I was near goal and off all the meds for cholesterol, asthma, blood pressure, anxiety etc and I had a clearer head. So it was probably a little of everything, exercise, food and losing the meds that were dulling my senses. Things DO feel funky during the rapid weight loss phase. For me, it passed. byebyedarkpassenger 203 Posted October 30, 2015 I've noticed a huge difference pre and post surgery. I tell people I've become thinner and dumber. I have a friend whom I beat at a word game online at least 8 times out of 10 and this has been going on for years. Then suddenly after surgery I could not for the life of me beat her. Now I'm back closer to winning a bit more than half the time but still feel like I'm not as sharp as before surgery.
OKCPirate 5,323 Posted November 11, 2015 Blood work is back. I've been really feeling funky. Don't know if it's allergy season or not (Johnie Appleseed's evil cousin, Roger Ragweed made his home in Oklahoma). My B Vitamin levels were actually high. Most things were very good. ALT was high and sodium was low. Compared to where I was a year ago I really cause for celebration. But not sure what is causing me to be suffering from diminished intellectual capacity especially in terms of memory. I'm going to be out of town for a few days, so let's see if that gets the fog to lift.
OKCPirate 5,323 Posted June 26, 2016 This is an older thread but I wanted to give a personal update. I started getting very concerned the first of December that something was wrong with my brain. I was under a great deal of stress and one night something happened and I lost about 12 hours during a conference. Absolutely no memory. I was told that I went to a party and I was really out of character and apparently was drinking heavy too. It was terrifying waking up with no recollection of where you are or why your clothes are still on and no idea where your phone is etc. My neurologist did brain scans to rule out a tumor and stroke. Since January I've been doing cognitive function tests to see if it was early dementia. There was steady upward progress on that front which ruled out that. So his final diagnosis was that it was a non-recurring brain seizure. The latest round of tests showed that I'm finally stable. Which goes along with how I feel and strangely what one of my colleagues whom I taught with last weekend. He didn't know about the testing, but his comment was "It's like the old you is back." Do I think this was related to WLS? No and neither does my neurologist. The brain is like any other body part and problems can happen. I'm just very glad it wasn't more serious and it looks as though I'm fully recovered.
