Wondering if I'm doing something wrong

Recommended Posts

I am about 2 weeks out of surgery.

My starting weight was 247. After the liquid diet, I was 236 the day of surgery. Two weeks later I am 225 for a weight loss of 22 lbs. However, it seems like since I started adding soft foods, I am stuck and have not lost anything in around 5-6 days. I think I'm staying around 700-800 calories a day. I don't have daily caloric goals but here is what I ate yesterday:

Breakfast: 1 scrambled egg

Lunch: less than 1/2 an avocado and some cheddar cheese

Dinner: maybe 5 bites of pulled pork. This started to not settle well and I panicked a little thinking it was not soft enough so I just quit eating it.

Snack: 5 bites of sugar free Jello, 1 Protein Drink (30 g)

Other days have been similar. I am getting in my Water.< /p>

I do understand the stall and I also may be retaining water because of my cycle. I also REALLY need to go to the restroom. I asked my nurse a week ago and she said take Milk of Magnesia which I have been with no success. Those could all be my issues but if I'm doing something wrong eating wise then I'd like to know about it now. At this point, it seems like it was easier to lose weight before the surgery!

Search 3 week stall. If you are weighing yourself daily- STOP. It's normal.

Are you aiming for 80g of Protein and hitting it?

You have not had a bowel movement yet?

Sounds like you are on a stall. Consider restarting with an all liquid high Protein day or two.

This will pass.

I am almost 8 weeks post op and have had 3 stalls so far. The longest one was just the past 2 weeks. They happen. Like the previous poster said - only weigh at MOST once a week. It will drive you crazy if you weigh yourself more than that.

The stall will pass and when it does you will laugh at yourself for panicking and sigh a big sigh of relief. Trust me. I sighed today :)

You can eat that stuff after two weeks? My doctor wouldn't have advised the pulled pork. Pretty much everything at that stage was liquid. As long as you are following your doctors food suggestions I guess it is okay. Stalls happen and they suck. Just hang in there and follows doctors orders!

At two weeks out I was on full liquids. At three weeks I was started soft foods.

Are you getting in all your Protein and Water every day? Getting enough fluids will help with Constipation. And getting in all of your Protein is critical for healing and weight loss.

A stall is very normal at about three weeks post op. In addition, you will stall again. Stalls are a normal, natural and necessary part of the process.

Embrace the Stall!

I am on soft foods, eggs, refried Beans, avocados, yogurt, tuna--all okay.

I don't think the pulled pork was okay. My husband made it in the crock pot and thought it would be okay but after about five bites I thought better of it. It wasn't on my list as an okay food to eat, either. That was my mistake.

I am getting all my liquid in but probably not all my Protein, at this point.

I would also add yogurt to this. Yogurt is higher in Protein. Perhaps for Breakfast try having some greek yogurt with a tsp of flax powder, wheat germ or psyllium sprinkled on top.

Other lunch ideas are refried Beans with a bit of cheese or a ricotta bake with a bit of chopped spinach for some additional Fiber. These are also things that would make good dinner options as well

For snack, try adding half an orange.

The additional Fiber several times a day may help with Constipation and help break the stall. These foods may also help get you closer to your Protein goal which may help break the stall.

You might also want to start keeping a food diary for a bit so you have a better idea of how you are meeting your protein goals.

@@sonnysun - I am thinking TOM, not enough Protein and the "stall" are all playing a factor. I have just passed a month were I lost 2lbs the scale seemed to just be stuck - then it moved me into Onederland! Hang in there and ask NUT/Dr about maybe a dose of Miralax.< /p>

Would suggest miralax too. You will feel better after going a bit.

I have been taking Milk of Mag, per my dr's suggestion last Wednesday. On Saturday, I thought I needed to try something else and I read about Miralax on here and tried that as well. Nothing. I'm going to call at lunch today and see what else they suggest.

I called the doctor and they said there's nothing they can do to help. Wait a few days and if no relief go to the ER.

I am looking at high Fiber foods, but I'm not sure if I can eat a lot of them on the soft diet. What about berries?

Get some Smooth Move tea or some Senna Leaf tea. You can find it at most grocers. Drink a cup before bed and that should help move things along. Also, it might help to take a stool softener on a daily basis.

What is on your food plan? You can add wheat germ, flax powder, psyllium to food on a soft diet. They are all excellent forms of fiber. Especially when added to high Protein foods like yogurts. They can also be blended into Protein shakes. Make sure you are getting in ALL your fluids since that will help with Constipation as well.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
