I had my first visit June 30, 2015. I had surgery August 6. I could of had mine the week before, but I had too much to do in preparation of taking 2 1/2 weeks off. I was self pay in the U.S.

I did self pay in Mexico. Several reasons for it...

  • Lower rate of infection
  • Much lower costs
  • Great results
  • No US paperwork (I enjoy some privacy from the dang government)
  • Less stupid crap that they make you do here for lawsuit avoidance

If you do look at Mexico as an option, do your homework just as you would for a US surgeon. And this is advice from guy who was heavy but healthy and who can do his own research, your results may vary depending on your ability to learn on your own, self regulate and really what your health is at the moment.

I also was a self pay patient. I had my sugery in Nevada. My first appointment was June 10th and my surgery was on July 22nd. I had to get a doctor's referral, bloodwork, an x-ray and psych evaluation. Then I picked out my surgery date.

I was self-pay after finding out my insurance didn't cover WLS. I went to Mexico and had it done (after extensive research) paid out of pocket there saved me 75% of what I would have paid staying here in the US.

My sister had surgery 2 weeks after her first appointment. It took me a month. We were both self pay.

I was self pay, and flew to Florida for a great US self pay price ($10,000). I had to have some testing done, but pretty much could have scheduled any time after my tests were done.

It was about two months from my first contact with the surgeon's office, and my surgery date. It could have been much quicker, but it took a couple of weeks to get in with my PCP to get my tests done, and I had conflicts that pushed it back about two weeks.

I was self pay and the doctor we my surgery 1 month from my consultation. However, I already had pcm and heart doctor clearance before I went to the doctor that did my surgery. I didn't have to have any other test

I attended the first informational meeting August 16th,2015. Even though I am self pay, the doctor had me do a battery of tests, (barium, blood tests, psychological exam, chest x-ray, electrocardiogram, endoscopy, sleep apnea test). All of this took a considerable amount of time. I questioned the length of time, but he said he had a great track record of success and he went to extensive measures to make sure it stayed that way. So bottom line, from the first meeting, to the surgery (November 18th, 2015) adds up to just over 90 days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
