Trouble getting liquids down!

Recommended Posts

I am miserable! Every time I try to get my liquids in I feel as if it stops at my chest. To the point I cant breathe. Anyone else having this problem? It is frustrating trying to get required amounts in.

I'm having the same problem. I just discovered that if I sip very little it goes down better, but I can't take a regular mouthful of anything or I feel like dying.

IDK how far post-op you are but in the beginning you have to take small sips. As time goes on and you heal you will be able to swallow more normally. I was very frustrated in the beginning with drinking but I promise it gets better!

Thank You! Good to hear that it will get better. So, I guess I will not be able to reach my Protein goal until I heal. My head says to drink more, but my sleeve says to slow down. Gotta listen to my sleeve. Thanks again !

Slow down. Use a spoon if you have to. It might take longer. Remember your breathing exercises. Good luck!

In the beginning it is so difficult! I remember thinking I wasn't going to make it. Try some different temps of fluids. Some can handle warm/hot better and some can only handle ice cold or anywhere in between.

One of the things that really helped me at first was Popsicles. It's not like taking a big drink but it's getting liquids in, try those. If you are still having issues - meaning you can't drink at all - you need to call your surgeon.

Did they give you the little measuring cups to drink from? Set an alarm on your phone or download an app (I used AquaAlert) and have it go off every 7 minutes. Drink 1/2oz every 7 minutes until you get your liquids in. It's a pain in the butt and every time I would hear that alarm I would get a little irritated LOL but it worked.

I'm two weeks post op today and still have this feeling. I feel so thirsty all the time so I probably take bigger sips than I should. I get that full/pressure feeling in my chest after I drink anything. I'm still dealing with a bit of nausea too. I'm seeing my surgeon today so hopefully he'll give me some clarity on how long it takes to heal and when these feelings go away. I feel your pain!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
