The short answer, because you need Water to survive and to function. If you don't have enough water for all of your bodily functions then it is going to go into a crisis mode and not function properly.

The one thing that a lot of people don't know or think about is that you were getting 64oz and above prior to surgery because your food was filled with Water. Every time you ate a cracker or a piece of cake you were getting in your Water. That is why you didn't have to pay close attention to it prior to surgery.

Now that you are so limited to how much you can eat your water intake is very low. That is why you need to make sure you are getting in AT LEAST 64oz of water/fluid every day. Take it from someone who ended up in the hospital for dehydration... you do not want to get dehydrated. It is horrible!

Not to be too graphic - but a lack of Water also makes it very difficult to eliminate waste products effectively. Since we tend to not get enough from food as we eat so little, we need to drink it.

The other issue is that for many thirst actually feels like hunger, ensuring that we are not thirsty helps with not feeling hungry to many too.

This is very helpful.

I find it hard to get in liquids and Protein. But I need to pay more attention.

Thanks!

Because about 70% of the body is made up of water! And maybe because the nutritionist hates me and knows the struggle I have with obtaining that much Fluid and finds my daily struggle comical? I don't know but I'd go with answer number one. Super annoying cells needing fluid to function...blah blah blah!

Carbs hold a lot of Water. For every one gram of carb you eat your body is able to hold onto 3 grams of water. When we dramatically reduce the amount of food and carbs we eat then our body can't use its reserve. It's empty. So we have to constantly be drinking water throughout the day so the body can function.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
