Gethealthy2016 17 Posted October 11, 2015 Ok, I admit I am a new to this and Protein Shakes. I have a strong taste aversion and gag reflex based on smell and taste. I have done tons of research and purchased Optimum Nutrition 100% whey Protein powder in both Salted Carmel and Double Rich chocolate. Mixed Carmel with 1% milk (did I mention I don't like milk) but while the taste wasn't horrible the smell killed it for me. I read mixing and letting it sit in the fridge will kill the smell and chalky taste. As well as mixing with Silk soy milk instead. Anyone have any thought or ideas on how to stomach this stuff? BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted October 11, 2015 You have to play around with mixing it with things you like or try another Protein Powder. Try it with Water, try it with a milk substitute, (Almond, hemp, oat, rice coconut or soy to name a few). Hopefully you kept your receipt so you can return any unused portion. Protein preferences vary according to individual taste buds. What I like someone else will hate and vice versa.
Gethealthy2016 17 Posted October 11, 2015 I did keep the receipt and purchased from a store where I can return until I find one I like. More or less hoping for tips and tricks others use to help with smell and taste. I think I can make a mix with syrups or something sugar free but none of that matters if the smell isn't gone
thisfathasgot2go 235 Posted October 11, 2015 (edited) Not sure how to mask the smell, but a flavored coffee creamer or some fruit (banana?) can add some flavor to these Protein Drinks too. Usually adds about 30 calories for a tablespoon. Edited October 11, 2015 by thisfathasgot2go
Tssiemer1 549 Posted October 11, 2015 I've been doing pretty good on already mixed drinks. I got some Unjury powder and having a rough time with the texture.
Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted October 11, 2015 Drink it from something with a lid (shaker bottle, sippy cup). A lid will help block the smell.
Gethealthy2016 17 Posted October 11, 2015 I have a Blender Bottle now-perhaps trying chocolate will be better. Crossing fingers the fridge trick will work because it is supposed to stop the gassy feeling from creating burps too! Worse case I will return both and get unflavored. I just want to make it as close to what I'd have to do post surgery so I can make it a habit now.
magtart 603 Posted October 11, 2015 I couldn't get past the taste or smell of any Protein powders. I finally decided to stick with chocolate Premier Protein and Isopure clear in he apple melon flavor.

Gethealthy2016 17 Posted October 12, 2015 Thanks everyone! I have silk soy milk and the ON double choc powder in the fridge with high hopes that it won't smell after it sits overnight. And I will try all the other tips as well

jess9395 5,449 Posted October 12, 2015 I know some physicians say only whey isolate Protein.... And it is true it's the most bio available so probably ideal for the early phases (one that adds caesin for later on May last longer in your stomach for satiety and blood sugar levels...) BUT that said, for me, the ones containing whey isolate only were the ones where I had a hard time with the smell. The ones that were a combination or a whey concentrate were better smell wise. I agree with the poster who said use a cup with a lid. Also chilling and ice. Those were what got me through.
JellyBellyNoMore 58 Posted October 12, 2015 I am so happy to see another post about Protein drinks. I am struggling to choke them down myself. I have a lid on my cup with a straw and that helps a ton! Although after surgery no straws allowed. I have tried the Premier in chocolate and thats been the best for me so far. I have to blend it with ice though. I have also tried nectar, injury, and premier in vanilla. I have also tried putting unfalvored in my Soup instead. Today I purchased more brands online. Please let me know what trick works for you in the end!
starrspunn 197 Posted October 12, 2015 I'm 6 months post op and have yet to find a Protein powder I can stomach. I can only handle Premier Protein and muscle milk ready made shakes.
