Ladies, I need your opinion

Recommended Posts

My Surgeon and my PCP told me that oral contraceptives are not recommended after WLS. The reason being is, they are not absorbed in a manner which would make them effective.

My PCP and I decided that the DEPO shot would work best for ME as it suits my lifestyle and my medical needs.

She gave me all the information on a number of non-oral contraceptives and I did consider the patch though I *personally* don't think it is for me. Nor did I think any IUD's or the NUVA-ring would be the right choice.

I think a lot of it depends on your fertility needs, lifestyle, smoking habits and current medical needs.

Talk to your Gyno and I am sure they will advise you on what is best for you. Good luck!

My gyno also told me oral contraceptives are a no go after bypass. She said the patch would be an option after I got down to 200 lbs. My choices were depo shots, nexplanon arm implant or IUD. I chose nexplanon and I've been pretty happy with my choice. It takes a minor in-office procedure to insert it and lasts three years. It can be taken out at any time.

Uuuuuuuuugg. I couldn't get Mirena placed due to pain and just switched from Depo to the pill. I have had a three week long period from hell switching.

Now I have to go back to Depo????

Depo made me feel crazy. I can't describe it.

Oh, eff, seriously?! I am so freaked about taking any BC and haven't had to worry about it for three years. Then bam! Right after surgery had a period (that was missing for over three years) that last almost three weeks. My PCP said, "if you're going to be menstruating and ovulating and don't want babies, you need birth control."

I didn't want an IUD as they kinda freak me out but I don't want DEPO to make me crazy. GAH!

They give you lidocaine. *shrug* It's all about what you feel comfy with.

I take the pill still. My doctor had no issue with it. I am on the progestin only right now though due to the clotting risk after surgery. He said in a few weeks I can go back to my normal pill. However, I'm using the pill more as a help for regulating periods and helping with PMDD, not as my only contraception method.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
