Recommended Posts

I am a month post op. I am wondering how you guys deal with being around friends eating and drinking. I am in the puréed stage. I want to isolate myself???? I feel like I am disappointing my husband. I feel all alone!!!

What you're feeling is completely normal at your phase. Please believe me, it gets better as your progress to eating more normal food. Try not to isolate yourself! It's super hard at first to see everyone enjoying food and alcohol around you, but as you progress to different foods, it will get easier. I think most of us felt the way you do at first, but it gets better! Hang in there!

Why do you feel you're disappointing your husband?

Totally normal! Keep in mind you also have a LOT of hormone changes going on right now that can also contribute to depression. I had it for quite a few months.

Maybe you and hubby could go for a walk or bowling or mini golf so you're spending time together without food being the focus? Of course only do those things if you are cleared by your surgeon. We wouldn't want you hurting yourself!

My husband wants to go out with friends and wants me to go and have fun. I want to it's just really hard to see everyone eating and drinking. Most of them don't know about my surgery so to pack little containers for me to eat I would have to explain. He's a great husband and very supportive but tonight he told me he doesn't know if the surgery was the right decision because I am sad and don't want to be around people

Why don't you just order Soup you can sip on it and feel like your part of everything. If they say is that all your eating say yes I ate late today ????

I love to eat out and soup has been my savior.

I never think about it. I focus on enjoying the company not the food. With a bit of planning it's easy. Since I have allergies I was already used to reading menus beforehand and planning what was safe before going out. If nothing was available I'd eat before I went and just get something simple to drink on and nurse that.

My brother went to the mall today to watch a movie. I had a good cry about it because I cannot sit for too long at a movie theater since I am 10 days post op. Plus the smell of the popcorn and then watching him scarf down a burger would probably do me in. So I stayed at home, cried a bit and watched Downton Abbey, it did make me feel better. Once I am back to feeling normal, I will venture to the movie theatre.

It all passes. There is a light at the end of the depression, hormone induced cry sessions, and feeling of being out of place. The liquids is the worst phase. The next phase which is really intimidating and scary and mixed with emotions is when you go out a few months later and see people who have not noticed the new you in a while. Its like a door opens and everyone notices how much your appearance has changed. It has been another roller coaster of emotion. Your co workers ask what you have been doing, what the secret is, the ones who know about surgery cant help but tell you how good you look. I had to retrain myself how to take a compliment and not over think it. You will feel amazing and with that feeling comes a new wardrobe you feel proud to be wearing and that also brings in the confidence. This is an incredible roller coaster we are all on. Hold on and keep all arms and feet inside the car!

Good luck ladies and keep faith that the end result is all worth it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
