One week? Purée or not?

Recommended Posts

Why is it that some of use have different dietary guidelines post-op? Because NUTs and Surgeons have different plans for their patients.

I never even had a pureed food stage. At day ten was I given the permission to move to soft Proteins.

I too found it quite frustrating to see how different post-op care varied from person to person.

I have complete and total faith in my Surgeon's plan for my weight loss and health.

Yes - but they must be blenderized "liquids". They have to be pourable.

I just had my post surgery class yesterday. Until 14 days post surgery we are on liquids. That includes shakes, ff milk, cal free beverages, vegetable juice, low fat strained Soup, sugar free popsicles, low sugar nonfat yogurt no chunks and hot cream of wheat runny.

At day 15 we progress to puréed / soft diet. At that stage we can add cottage cheese, meats, fish, tofu but they don't have to be blended to a liquid. We just have to be sure it is soft and can be chewed to applesauce consistency.

Every program is so different. For my program I will be on a notified diet for a total of 10 weeks. 2 weeks preop (Bariatric Advantage), 2 weeks full liquids and 6 weeks soft/puréed.

Edit to add: my puréed food guideline is to add as little liquid as possible to conserve consistency. My nut recommended crockpot cooking to get the meat really tender.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
