No protein & no vitamins, is it a problem?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm two weeks out and have not had any Protein Shakes or Vitamins so far I feel fine and not having any complications. Is it ok to continue on with this? Are there any dangers if so what are they? I don't want to exclude this part out of my post op guidelines and end up having problems after so would really appreciate some advice.

Thank you.

You should be getting your Protein. It helps with healing. Vitamins are necessary because you wont be able to eat enough to get the same nutrients.

If you haven't had Protein shakes, how are you getting your Protein? You aren't required to have shakes, but without some sort of protein supplement it will be impossible to get enough protein when you are restricted to clear and/or full liquids.

What is your protein goal?

Mine is 100 grams and I was expected to meet that goal the day after surgery.

Are you getting 64 oz of fluid/water?

I didn't have to worry about Vitamins until a week after surgery. You do need to start taking Vitamins as directed by your program.

Without protein, Water, and proper nutrition, you risk not healing, not losing weight, malnutrition, and much much worse.

You need to get a minimum of 60 gms of Protein and 64 ounces of fluids. Protein is a key factor in successful and healthy weight loss. It also helps you maintain healthy hair and nails while you are losing. If you can do this without shakes that's fine. The goal is to get most of your nutrients from food anyway. As to whether or not you need supplements, again, that's up to you. If you can get enough of those Vitamins and nutrients through food, then you are fine. Most of us can't simply because we can't eat that much food. You should discuss these decisions with your bariatric program. Hopefully they are doing regular bloodwork to monitor your levels. I would recommend taking at least a multi Vitamin.

Personally I aim for 100gms of protein daily as I find that I lose better. Even a year out there is simply no way I could get that much protein in without some supplemental assistance. A hearty Protein shake before the gym starts my day off and keeps me going.

In the September thread you said don't like the shakes and eggs make you sick, but you find the things in your program binder "extreme". What exactly did you expect from a surgery that removes 75% of your stomach? My advice is to call your nutritionist or doctor and review things with them.

Blerdgirl, I've tried an egg but I throw up I haven't tried shakes I try to make my own beverage with fruits etc but not a Protein Shake as such. I realised that if its not something I used to have or have tried prior to my surgery I cannot keep it down and also I've been back in hospital due to dehydration I just don't have the energy to get up and make anything I feel faint whenever I do. I know I should be following guidelines that's why I've reached out to you guys to see if Vitamins and Protein Shakes are really necessary, I apologise if the post offended anyone but thank you for the advice

Your initial post said you were feeling fine and aren't having complications?

Come to find out you are weak and have been to the hospital for dehydration. Is that how you define feeling fine?

Well @@Melvyn96 judging by how you're feeling now i gather you see the importance of taking your Vitamins and drinking your Protein. It's imperative. If you don't make shakes at least substitute em somehow. I know it's hard but get in touch with your surgeons office.

Yes it's a problem. It is why you feel weak and tired. If you are unable to be up enough to make drinks, try some pre-made ready to drink shakes such as Premier Protein.

Why are you in bed most of the day? At 2 weeks out you are still in danger of blood clots. You need to be up and moving around more than once a day.

@@Melvyn96 - The answer is yes it's a problem. You will be tired, you will be malnourished and eventually you will stop losing because the body will go into starvation mode. You have to find some way to get in Protein. shakes, RTD, yogurt or any other food. You also need to sip Water whenever you are not taking in Protein and you need to be moving.

This board cannot replace your program. Every program has a slightly different protocol and none of us are your medical team. They gave you a handbook. READ it. If that's too much, call them.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
