Im new. Im Clueless. And I have surgery Monday! 10/12 HELP!

Recommended Posts

Im new and ready to get familiar with the community here. Been thinking about making an account here for a while. Im just seeking general advice. I feel like my doctors office sort of rushed me. Yesterday, they told me someone canceled for Monday 10/12 and if I would like to take that Surgery date. Of course, I said SURE! Went the same day, and did all my pretesting and registered. Now its hitting me and Im freaking out! HELP!

I have been a strong community member in other forums, but Im new here, and I would love some friends and support! Thanks

Well congratulations and Welcome! I don't know what to say to comfort you since I've never been in that situation but I'm sure everything will be just fine. If you need more time just tell them!

Welcome to the forum!

This is a great place to learn and get support.

Just how clueless are you? Have you had any pre-op education? Have you met with a NUT about what you will need when you get home from the hospital? Have you talked with your NUT, surgeon, and psych about expectations? Have you read anything about the surgery you are having?

Rather than type all night, I recommend you do a quick search on this site about what to take to the hospital (chapstick, a pillow, a heating pad, a change of underwear, your phone charger, etc.) and read some of the pre-and post-op pages.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the replies! I thought about asking them for more time, but I have been on the liquid diet for about a week I feel like I have prepared my body.

Well I have done all the pre surgery requirements which include the things you mentioned Surfer Girl. I remember in 08 when I joined baby center, how I didnt know what all the acronyms meant, now I cant type one sentence with out using BBC slang. . . . . I have no idea What a NUT is.

AND what to pack for the hospital bag is something I NEED to go over. Thanks A TON for that.

You'll probably need some sugar-free Popsicles, some broths, and liquid Tylenol waiting for you when you get home.

My surgeon's office gave me some ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates when I came home from the hospital and I bought some at his office. They were an excellent way to get my Protein during my first week (clear stage). I know a lot of people also use the Isopure ready to drink for clears.

Oh I totally forgot about the Liquid Tylonol! OMG! Thanks so much! I am doing last minute shopping today, so that was extremely helpful!

I found pajama bottoms helpful when I was sitting around and walking the hospital halls. You might also want to bring some Chapstick because your lips may be parched before you can drink.

I was just sleeved on 9/28. The only things I used at the hospital were my phone and toothbrush/toothpaste. My best recommendations are to be sure that you walk as much as possible after surgery to help with the pain and gas. If your hospital offers you an abdominal binder take advantage of it because it helps with pain so much in the first few days especially. Best of luck to you.

Hi PurpleJazz,

Like you I was a nervous wreck. I met with a dear friend who went down this road a couple years ago and laughed at how freaked out I was. If you've done all the steps with the surgeon's office, your head knows what is in store. Just sit back, breathe, and know you are going to be great. Don't take any meds not approved by your doc. I only took my phone, Chapstick and toothbrush/toothpaste to the hospital as well. The hospital will have you covered for everything else. Wishing you all the best. I'm so unbelievably thankful I took this step on Sept. 9. You will, too. Breathe and take a relaxing bubble bath as baths will be out during your recovery. ????

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
