Inches not pounds...hmmm.

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I went to my PCP. She is awesome, I love her and I hope I never, ever, ever have to be without her for my medical needs. She has been a guiding light through my WLS journey.

Anyway.

Before she even looked at my chart, she took one look at me and said "Oh my goodness girl, you are shrinking!" With tears in my eyes I said "but I haven't lost any weight in the last week, something must be wrong!"

After she helped wiped the tears and soothe my insecurities she commented that it appears as if I am losing inches, rather than pounds.

Huh? I don't understand and before she could explain we were got off track talking about birth control, Migraine medicine, Iron supplements and other topics of health related interest(s).

So, is it possible to be losing inches and not pounds? Is that really a "thing" or was she just trying to make me feel better?

I never understood the 'losing inches but not pounds" thing either. Maybe its that the weight is sort of redistributing itself?? Some swear it occurs, it doesn't seem logical to me though.

I, on the other hand, feel like I'm a case of the direct opposite. I'm losing pounds, but for the love of God the inches are slow to disappear-- especially in my hips!!!

I remember when my sister first started Paleo eating habits, she appeared as if she was melting. It seemed as if every other week when we would visit, she was getting smaller. When I mentioned it she would say "really?! I've only lost about 12 pounds (or 15 or 22 or 24) and didn't think it would be a big enough loss to make a difference."

I just thought she was under playing her weight loss as to not make me feel bad about my size or her scale was way off.

I did some Googling (oh that Google, so damn smart) and discovered several articles on the issue.

I still am not quite sure how it all works but I'll taking losing ANYTHING over gaining, any day. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
