Recommended Posts

Me and My co worker got the sleeve People at work keep saying all in not that serious it was cosmetic surgery or y'all took the easy way out. I'm not sure if I should be mad or let them keep being the haters that they are. It's really none of there business and if the insurance paid for it don't be mad. Is anyone else going through that people just being mean ??????

Ask the haters to tell you everything they know about bariatric surgery. Chances are, it's not much. Give the haters your doctor's phone number and tell them to call your doctor to say that they disagree with your diagnosis. Maybe that will shut them up. There is nothing easy about this. Hugs.

I agree with Miss Mac. I have not told anyone at work nor am I going to. I know they will know at some point but I'm not volunteering the information at this time.

You really have to be careful of who you chose to tell. I think there is a stigma attached to having WLS. Additionally people can't resist giving their opinions about something they are not educated about and obviously have not done any research on. I would not engage in any conversations with them if all they can do is criticize you but that is just my opinion.

I am very fortunate that all my co-workers and my boss are very supportive. That being said, people in life have no filters an seem to not have any problem judging others to their face. I agree, I would ask them what do they know about bariatric surgery that makes them think it is easy. They definitely don't know anything if they think it is easy.

You can always shut them down by ignoring them if you choose or you can try to use it as an opportunity to educate them on the fact that the surgery is only one tool. They may listen but don't get your hopes up.

Good luck!

Tell them to suck rocks! Then you keep it moving! The easy way out it to continue failing at dieting and die an early death! This is a lifetime of work!

Today people are very judgmental and not supportive and tend to jump to conclusions. I didn't want people to know I was having the surgery until I was ready to share do the fact that I didn't want anyone monitoring my wt loss and eye balling me but it leaked out, so oh well!! With that being said don't let it alter your mood, shake it off!! Once you've reached your goal they are going to be secretively inquiring about the surgery too????????

I've been pretty open with friends and co-workers about my surgery. Most are supportive. Some are insatiably curious and ask all kinds of questions. Doesn't bother me. The worst is when I'm talking to someone who wants to tell me all the ways they've tried to lose weight and how WLS just isn't for them. I want to say, "Good for you. It was right for me. I don't regret a minute."

I told my daughter the other day that if anyone ever suggests that this journey is easy I'm going to punch them in the face twice. Seriously. I've never worked so hard for anything in my life. The surgery, the pain, the limitations, the exercise, the knowing it's not reversible - there's no sitting down to two plates at Thanksgiving or just having another sliver of pie... this is huge.

And if they want to listen to you, they will. And if not, well, you know where they can go. ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
