about the pre op diet

Recommended Posts

broth can have a lot of sodium- but not to bad of a choice is choose a low sodium version. The main goal of the pre-op diet is to shrink the fat around your liver. A high Protein, low carb, low fat, low cal diet will be very successful! Be sure to take 2 x a day a multi-Vitamin.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, if you are being banded at the Surgical Weight Loss Centre by Dr. Cobourn, they don't like you to have chicken broth during the pre-op diet. If you find the Optifast and veggies too hard to tolerate (some do, some don't), then you should just give the clinic a call and talk to the nurses about it. They sometimes suggest other things that people can have, depending on your personal medical condition, BMI, etc. I know that for some patients they will allow plain chicken breast, for example. But you really need to get advice based on your own individual case.

Good luck!

I can't imagine why not. Just watch what the calories are and the sodium, too.

No broth for Coburn patients.

Stick to what the pre-op package says and what they tell you at the clinic.

For me when I was on my pre-op diet dill pickles were a life saver. They are a little salty, crunchy and make you feel like you are eating real food. I used Bick's as they are low in carbs & calories. I ate a 2L jar in about 10 days.

Stick in there.

hey

i'm being banded by dr. cobourn too, and the nurses at the clinic told me that a veggie broth (low fat, low sodium) was okay. mccormicks has a good one, just make sure you've got the lowfat/sodium one. i'm not sure why it's only the veggie...

whens your surgery?

Fascinating! I wonder why not? Perhaps not broth, but boullion? If pickles are okay, I can't imagine that boullion/broth (fat free of course) would be worse in the salt department. Dill pickle juice saved my life in the post-op clear liquid phase!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
