I have been a smoker for about 24 years non-stop. Well I went cold turkey the first part of July 2015.....no more smoking for me..... I went and took the nicotine urine test on Sept. 28 and the result was that I still had nicotine in my system. I was very upset because I have not been smoking. The nurse said it was a very small amount in my system. She also said it was probable coming from my husband that smokes... secondhand smoke. He always smoke outside (I stay inside). Is this possible ... can I actually get nicotine in my system from second hand smoke? Also I was thinking maybe it is because I have been an avid smoker for so many years that it is deeply embedded in my body and has not completely left. Please tell me what you think......need all the help I can get.

Congratulations on quitting smoking. I think the real question is whether the minute amounts of nicotine might interfere with you upcoming surgery. I suspect the answer is no.

I was wondering if you used an aid such as a nicotine patch or e-cigarette to stop smoking. I think these products might contain some nicotine and that could cause your nicotine levels to still be present.

James,

Thanks, it was not easy. I did not use anything to help stop .....I simply quit cold turkey; that is why I was wondering how I still have nicotine in my system......even a minute amount.

Second hand smoke can put nicotine in your system, some may even come off of his clothing after he's just finished and you go around him. If its a minute amount I wouldn't even worry to be honest.

Nicotine can be present up to 30 days after you use it. And your metabolism also plays a role on how fast it clears the body. Congrats on quitting! I'm quitting myself! I've only been smoking for 8 years.. But it still seems like a lifetime. It's very hard to quit cold turkey! And I commend you on that! Great job!
