Sounds like you are doing great!

I did my labs yesterday and my post-op appointment is tomorrow.

On your plan, how long was your pureed food phase? What did it consist of?

I know I am on full liquids through day 14, then I am on soft foods from days 15 - 30.

I am hoping that I can be successful trying to balance drinking and eating/chewing.

I did not do a great job of that pre-op.

well there was no pureed portion of my plan I had just read that on the internet lol. But I think it's two or three weeks.

What was your drinking, eating, chewing challenge?. In my culture we don't generally drink during meals so I'm ok on that unless I'm drinking wine which clearly I'm not right now. Lol

My nutritionist said she lived on those rotisserie chickens. and i love those, so no prob there :)

Sounds like you are doing great!

Ok, so you are like me, on liquids til day 14 and then soft foods. I cannot wait!

Pre-op, I tried my best to not eat and drink at the same time. I just did it unconsciously.

So having to stop drinking 30 minutes before and after each meal is going to be hard because of habit.

I also did not chew my foods 30 times before swallowing. I have to get better at this.

they said day 15 is any foods but it's "easier" to start with soft stuff. my nut said she lived on roteissere chickens cuz they are moist and soft and easy to eat.

this liquid thing is killing me. i don't do the 30x chewing thing either but i will definitely start once we're off liquid hell phase. -_-

oh i got a great tip from a lady (and a not so great tip lol).

The great tip was make your own delicious Soup - she made bean Soup, chicken tortilla soup etc and then strain it to drink a tastier broth. It's not quite as low sodium but at least you won't wanna kill yourself by day 10 of the liquid diet.

her 'not so great' tip was "hey...ice cream is the same consistency as yogurt!" LOL. bad bad girl! i won't do that just cuz i want the weight to keep dropping off but it was kinda funny.

I had my post-op visit with my surgeon today. He looked at my labs and right off said I was not drinking enough Water. Ding, ding, ding. I admit I have not, but my pee is not brown so I thought I was ok, I guess not. So I have to up my water TOO!

Well kids I have diarrhea. Now I am sick with a cold and I took two NyQuil but I might maybe just maybe have diarrhea because of the matzo ball. But I also just had some chicken broth so I don't know. I would love to rationalize away the matzo ball but I really can't so I guess I'm not cheating anymore until this damn 14 day liquid thing is over. Insert mad face

Yeah, probably the matzo ball. Thanks for helping to prevent my diarrhea episode. I hope you get over it soon. :(

Here's the "two week" email from my doctor...

It is now 2 weeks since your Sleeve Gastrectomy and time to begin transitioning from the liquid phase to more solid food. Start off with foods of the consistency of scrambled eggs and cottage cheese and gradually increase to normal solids and meats and vegetables. Be aware that initially that you will likely feel full before the 4 ozs, most feel full with 1-3 ozs of solid food. This will gradually increase over this next year. Even if you cannot initially eat the full 4 ozs, I believe it is still important to weigh out with a scale or measure with a known size container a consistent 4 ozs every meal, even if you have to throw away or restore what you cannot finish. This gets you in the important habit of portioning out a known food volume rather than just eating as much as your stomach will hold. Also it trains your brain to see 4 ozs as a lot of food, whereas your brain before surgery saw 4 ozs as just a tiny amount of food. Also it teaches your brain that it is OK not to always have to finish all the food on the plate, and it is OK top stop eating even when more food is available. How much you can eat will also depend on what foods you are eating. For example, you may be able to eat 3 ozs of something soft like scrambled eggs, but only 1 ozs of something more dense like chicken, and you will have to eat chicken in smaller bites and slower than scrambled eggs. As you increase the solids you should be weaning off the Protein shakes. Most patients like doing just one Protein shake for a Breakfast Meal Replacement. If you eat a solid Breakfast you do not need to do a Protein Shake.< /p>

If you feel discomfort, pain, or acid reflux after eating it usually means you took too big a bite, ate too fast, or overfilled the Sleeve pouch. You should stop eating before you begin feeling discomfort but you will only be able to determine this if you are eating slowly and concentrating on your level of "fullness." If you are having acid reflux at night you can try over the counter Prilosec, Pepcid or Zantac. If it persists let us know and we can give you a prescription for something stronger like Protonix or Nexium.

Great email. So what is going to be your first solid food meal? Do you have a scale?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
