Hello all!

Back when I was 18 I had thought about having Gastric Bypass RNY done and had attended a seminar with both my parents. At the time I decided it wasn't for me, and that I wasn't entirely that big to need it. At age 21 I had matured a little and realized I wasn't loosing weight for the life of me (thanks PCOS) and threw my 2nd attempt at getting WLS done. My mother is 14 years post op and dropped down from 250-134/138 and is still maintaining this far out! So I grew up seeing the positive effects of WLS. Life got busy, one thing lead to the next and my military family was up to move again in the middle of my WLS journey PRE-OP.

Fast forward, Im now almost 24 and have started my WLS journey for the third time from the beginning (second if the first doesn't count) and I have finished my 7 months of guided nutrition appointments and am set for my final eval in 3 short weeks! Today I finally got the go ahead to get my (millions) of labs done, chest xray, EKG, and the appointments set up for my EDG and Psych Eval ! its a little unbelievable that its finally getting to the end because this process has been so long! The only thing standing in my way is smoking :( once I can take a nicotine test and pass it then we can set a surgery date and this is the farthest ive been! Any advice from former smokers?? I live a very active lifestyle, despite being 243lbs. I am a lifeguard, a lifeguard instructor, swim coach, masters swimmer, former highschool varsity and national cheerleader, and have been training for a half marathon since May 2014! working out is not my weak point at all! just nervous about the types of foods I have to start incorporating into my life. also smoking hinders my everyday and active lifestyle so im looking to quit for good!

Any advice helps!

My DH used an e cig. He used one that was just like the menthol cigs he smoked. He started with a low nicotine liquid and after a few weeks weaned himself off of the nicotine.

He still uses the e cig but with no nicotine.

3 years free. His dr thinks it's great and his myriad health issues have cleared up.

Go for it I have pcos as well so I know the struggle I am almost seven months out and here's my before and after pictures, I was supposed to get it when I was 21 but I kept backing it out, I finally realized that I needed help I can't do it by myself I decided to have it 4 days before my 24th birthday as a gift to me and I can't be even more happier this was the best gift I gave myself, I can't wait to my 1 year anniversary and 25th birthday I am gone have a celebration of my life time

Ask for nicotine Patches or wellbutrin to help you. Most insurances cover cessation aids. I hear vaping helps but when I quit it wasn't a popular option. I quit several years before I had surgery so it wasn't urgent. You can do it. Just try figure out what will help you fight the cravings.

also, I was given Wellbutrin last year to try and stop so I took that once in the morning for the past 4 days and it has reduced the urges!

I've done chantex to quit in the past, and it did work. I started again, and now I vape 0mg with no nicotine! It helps because I can still smoke, but I'm not using nicotine. Not ideal, but at least you'd be able to pass your nicotine test...

I also quit years before surgery but when I was quitting I used Chantix. it helped me to cut down from 2 packs a day to a half a pack within days. and than a stay in the hospital stopped me for good. I wish you luck., you will feel better after you quit. its nice to be able to go anywhere and never have to worry about going and have a smoke. wish you well on your new life after surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
