It's been 13days now I'm still on liquids but I must admit I have been enjoying a few softs in moderation and taking my time, a few bites, & paying attention to my body. Through it all the hardest thing I've noticed so far is I feel like I'm not enjoying my food to its entirety. I want to just gobble it up take large bites cause I feel with the small ones I'm just not getting the satisfaction and not enjoying my food. It may sound crazy but it's true. I'm taking my time though...and saying as time passes and the more my body heal I'll be and feel more normal and be able to enjoy eating (healthy) and being satisfied????

For me, especially in the first few weeks, nothing tasted good. Nothing felt satisfying. But because I required so little food, it was a workable trade off. I thoroughly enjoyed, and still do, that food is no longer a mitigating factor in my life. I'm eating normal portions, and I'm not starving. Each day the head hunger diminishes in intensity as well. It's great!

I'm a week pre-op and look forward to joining you guys on the loser's bench - save me a seat! My support group (family and friends) keep asking me if I am nervous. Honestly, I'm just anxious to get the surgical portion over with, so I can get on with my life. I'm ready for this and all your threads and responses has made me so confident in my life choice.

THANK YOU!

Thanks!!! Its definitely a life long change and taking some getting use to(one day@a time) I say. When "FOOD" has always been a huge part of your life and you found enjoyment in just eating it's a huge challenge just to "SLOW DOWN!!!" But one day at a time I'm sure it's going to get easier.

Oh yes! I still have problems slowing down at 8 months out. Learning to eat to live rather than living to eat is a total change.

Wait until you forget to eat because you were busy, that is an odd feeling. I think part of it is at the moment you are thinking about this and not trying to make a mistake. But when the stuff hits the fan around the holidays or work, it will blow your mind how little you actually think about needing to eat.

BTW don't do that, because you will get one heck of a headache. Not that I'm bitter or anything. ;-)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
