Is it possible to lose too much?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I just was wondering if it's possible to lose too much weight too fast.

I'm 5 days post op and I've lost 8 pounds since day of surgery.

Normally I would be super excited! And believe me I am! But I can take about 20oz of liquids a day and I'm trying to make as much of it Protein as possible. According to my program papers I should be able to drink more than that. I try to get my sips in and I'm honestly doing better than where I started.

I guess my concern is, I don't want to lose all this weight so fast that I STILL end up unhealthy with malabosorbtion issues. I already feel weak at times and the room spins when I get up super fast. Sipping doesn't hurt but I fill really fast (obviously).

I just want to know if losing weight this fast is common. And if I should expect it to level out.

That sounds pretty normal for loss considering you probably haven't eaten any real food or calories in a week. I'm on day 3 post op and down 3lb. But I also have a lot of bloating in my stomach. I'm in Mexico for surgery n all they give us is ice and apple juice, no Protein. :/

It will slow down soon enough.

It seems like I was losing at a 2 pound per day rate for a couple weeks and then it slowed down. It is funny first you worry that you are losing weight too fast then you hit a period of not losing weight for a week or two and then you worry about that. I guess the best advice is just don't worry.

Try to get as much Protein and liquid as you can, take your Vitamins, follow your nutritionist's advice and you are all set.

Losing lots of weight at the beginning is absolutely normal, then it averages out as you start eating a bit and will slowly continue losing.

Good luck, the worse is over, now the real life starts for you!

it seems most people lose a lot the first month or two, then it slows down to about 2-3 lbs a week. And it slows down even more once you're a few months out.....

Sounds to me you need to chat with your surgeon and general practitioner.

Just to put your mind at ease. Get facts and info from them of what they expect your weight loss journey to look like and what things are normal as to when you should start to worry.

Do your own research also. It doesn't do any good to always be worried and questioning if things are going the right way or not.

I talked to them this morning and they said as long as I'm working on my sips and taking my Vitamins I should be ok.

I'm six week post op (bypass) and had the same concern about losing weight too fast. I went from a 1-2# daily loss to 2-3# weekly loss currently. I've gone from daily weigh ins to weekly weigh ins. I'm no medical professional but I was told that if my urine was light colored I was probably getting enough fluids. To reach my Protein goal of 70 grams daily, I still have 2-3 shakes before I have any other real food.

So update: I'm one week post op today and I weigh 224.5. So 10.5 pound loss in a week. I need to start moving more. I just cramp up really bad after a bit. I'm happy about how fast I'm losing because I really wasn't expecting this since i started at a smaller bmi. I start purée foods tomorrow and switch to only eating three times a day with Protein Shakes in between. It's going to be interesting to see how this effects my rate of weight loss.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
