Artificial Sweetners

Recommended Posts

Well, I've come to the conclusion that I cannot tolerate artificial sweetners any longer. I've tried Stevia, Truvia, Splenda, Sweet and Low and various others. What can I use to substitute or add a little sweetner to things??? Honey? Agave? Raw honey? Should I just use less than a tsp of regular sugar?! I'm totally fine with Powerade Zero which has sucralose in it...Not sure what exactly is going on with these taste buds. I'd almost rather just have everything unsweetened than to taste those yucky artificial sweetners. :( Help!

I use agave light nectar. I have used honey also but prefer agave nectar. It takes very little to add flavor

Thank you...I'd almost rather have 1/4 tsp of the real thing instead of the horrible taste and upset tummy I get with the artificial sweetners. :(

I'm surprised you can have Powerade zero, which has sucralose, but not Splenda, which is also sucralose.

How are you trying the sweeteners? In coffee? food? How much are you using? How far post op are you? You might just need more time.

I'm 4 weeks and 5 days. Wednesday will be 5 weeks. The only thing I use it in is usually oatmeal/cream of wheat, plain Greek yogurt, Decaf green tea or black tea. All I use is just half a packet of sweet n low or Splenda in each. I guess I should've added with the powerades, I have to dilute it half Water half Powerade. Still doesn't really make sense though. Also, sugar free pudding and Jello upsets me. Sugar free creamsicles. Last night I bought a Quest bar...I was craving Peanut Butter and regular PB is filled with fat so I had a TINY bite...I mean pea size bute...of a peanut butter supreme quest bar and YUCK. It tasted like artificial WAX. I will not be eating those. So as of today, I'm cutting out all SF "sweets" and sweetners and just going to drink/eat things the way they come.

I just want a more natural way to sweeten. That's all. I don't know which is "healthier" sugar/fat/carbs wise. Raw honey? Regular honey? Agave? Raw Agave? Plain old shurgar? Brown shurgar? Notice I spell sugar like shurgar because that's how I say it. LOL :D

There's lot of discussions in health forums and generally speaking sugar is sugar. Your body doesn't differentiate between maple Syrup or agave. Use very little of whatever you want and it will be fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
