Had my RNY 7 weeks ago today, down 38 pounds, feeling wonderful (besides getting tired easily, but that is to be expected). I regret nothing! I hope you have the luck that I have had. :)

Had my RNY on 07/29/15. Zero complications and very easy recovery.

I had my surgery almost 5 days ago. I had a few "complications" nothing too serious but it was enough to drive me insane in the hospital.

1. My heart rate was high the entire time. At resting it was about 115. When I was in pain or stressed it would reach 140. We attributed it to anxiety. It was my first major surgery and being alone hearing all the machines stressed me out. They eventually had me swallow Valium at like 3am because my heart rate stayed over 125 for way too long. And it really helped. Once I was calm I could finally sleep and I felt a lot better.

2. Peeing. I know this doesn't sound crazy but not being able to go is a medical emergency and extremely painful after having abdominal surgery. After 4 hours in recovery they brought me to my room. Within the next two hours I had to go to the bathroom EXTREMELY bad. They helped me up to the bathroom and I couldn't go. They did a bladder scan and I was almost two times the amount that they catheterize people at (500cc, I was 900cc). So they put in a catheter and it stayed there until the next morning. They took it out and tried getting me to go all day but I couldn't even when I had to. Later in the day my bladder was painfully full again so they had to catheterize me again (this one didn't stay in tho). I couldn't go to the bathroom on my own until 9pm. I met all the go home requirements by noon except for my ability to go to the bathroom. I still have trouble going which isn't always fun but I think my bladder has been really slow to come back from the surgery.

So complications as in leaking or trouble with throwing up I haven't had yet. But those were the two things that were an immediate concern after waking up from surgery. Other than those, I've been really good. Everything I thought would be rough wasn't, like swallowing or burping.

Best of luck on your journey. I hope it goes smooth for you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
