Waiting for approval

Recommended Posts

My surgeon was starting the process to send everything into my insurance on 9/29/15. My husband & I don't know how to plan anything right now & having 2 young kids it's very hard to not plan. How long did you wait for approval? I live in PA & have MA...not that, that matters.

This won't help you, but it can really vary. Are you fairly confident you will get approved - did all your requirements, insurance covers bariatric surgery, etc.? If so, then sometimes a week to 30 days. (Mine was actually filed on a Friday and approved on Monday but I think that is rare.) If there is a chance of denial (and my understanding is there is often a denial on the first attempt), then it could be longer. And then once you are approved it depends on how busy your doctor is to as to when you can schedule surgery. There is a lot of variables....

I will say this, if they get it approved, it will have to be before year end - assuming your insurance is calendar year and not a different fiscal year.

I have heard from my surgeon s office 4 to 6 weeks is the normal amount of time for insurance companies then I think some have gotten surgical dates as soon as 2 weeks

Every insurance company is different but I waited a little over a week for approval. Another two weeks to schedule surgery. And then a month after that for my actual surgery.

In all, with satisfying my requirements, it took me a year from start to finish. But many people have a much shorter time frame. It's all relative to your particular insurance. Good luck!

I am pacing & pacing! 15 days have passed. I watch for my mailman with my dog lol why must it come in the mail? Why not a phone call? Email? ???? Yes I know I'm being over dramatic but I know you all know or will know how I'm feeling!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
