Will seasonal allergies prevent surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi All! I'm just curious if anyone's had this come up or not. I suffer from seasonal allergies & right now I'm a congested coughing mess. No fever or signs of infection yet though... my surgery is in 10 days. Any thoughts on whether or not the surgery will be cancelled/postponed? I already emailed my surgeon's office & was told that I could take OTC allergy meds... I'm just worried. Side note, in the past these allergies have been known to eventually develop into a sinus infection, but so far I'm clear of that.

As long as they don't turn into a sinus infection, no

I dont see any reason that they would cancel over allergies. Good luck and congrats on your surgery day!

I would not want to be coughing right now as I'm healing up.

Most of my pain is from a abdominal hernia repair which was done at the same time.

I'm using Flonase to help ensure the sneezes and coughs stay away.

@@Dub - No kidding, glad I don't have smokers cough any more, that would have been a deal breaker

God if I had to cancel or schedule with no allergies, I'd like 1-2 wks a year I could do it! My seasonal allergies always end in ear infections, so I keep a steady stream of drugs going. I take Allegra-D during the day with Flonase and at night I take benedryl and when my ears are starting to get sore, like now, I mix together lanolin, 15 drops eucalyptus oil, 7 drops tea tree oil, and 7 drops peppermint oil and use a q tip to drop it in the canal. Usually after a few treatments, the ear infection is gone. My PCP is actually recommending my remedy to people after I went from literally constant ear infections to maybe one a season. It also makes a great natural decongestant(like vapor rub) if rubbed on the throat-just keep out of your eyes!

Here is a yucky thought, hopefully it goes in this same thread, but allergies can also cause a lot of nasal drip (back of throat). I would think that could affect upset stomach the first few days. Surely it's not that uncommon and the doctors office can make some suggestions to help curb this issue before it gets to far out of control.

Allergies suck.

That's as plainly as I can put it.

Ear infections ??????? Damn. Those can be painful at a level that renders folks unable to do anything buy lay in bed and moan.

I'm sorry to hear that you get symptoms that bad. I feel for you.

Somehow, as I've gotten older, my symptoms have lessened over the years. I don't know what to attribute it to. They flare up if I travel. Exposure to different pollens and irritants from new areas will usually set them off again.

Allegra & Flonase have been very much appreciated over the years.

No absolutely not! Even if you did have a sinus infection, as long as it's not life threatening (which they rarely are), don't worry! Good luck with your surgery!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
