Hernia repair, gall bladder removal, and gastric bypass at the same time.

Recommended Posts

I haven't but my surgeon's office makes it standard to have your gallbladder out at the same time as the bypass/sleeve/etc, and I know a lot of people out of my office who have had hernial repairs at the same time. Everyone seems to come out of it okay. I had my RNY almost 7 weeks ago and my gallbladder out last summer. Good luck! :)

my surgeon suggested losing at least HALF of my weight before he will repair my umbilical hernia. if done early, massive weight loss could cause things to shift and the repair will need to be repaired.

I BEGGED my surgeon to yank my Gallbladder while he was RIGHT NEXT TO IT and he was like, that is a different procedure. I was like, how about a sonogram let's check for stones that would justify the surgery, and he got a little pissed, Doctors hate it when they cannot just talk over you. He denied that request as well. So, I get to take Actigall for the next year.......

@Jangy03253 You had/have or are having a DS, which is a much more involved operation that a LRNY GB. Also as DS patients lose the most weight of all the surgeries, I don't think it is a bad idea at all to remove the Gallbladder just to prevent what is bound to be another surgery down the road. Apparently the chances of you developing gallstones in in relation to the amount of weight you lose and how fast you lose it.

I had a severe hietal hernia repaired with by RNY but my gall bladder was removed over 6 years ago. My recovery was very easy but I have a super high pain tolerance. My surgeon requires those with gall bladders to take some medication after surgery; I didn't pay too much attention since I didn't have mine anymore. Good luck!

I know I'm replying to an old post here, but how is everyone who had the gallbladder out and hernia repaired and the gastric bypass? I'm meeting with my surgeon on Tues Nov 12, and I'm hoping to do all at the same time. His office said they do all 3 on patients regularly.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
