jadesingslaaa 3 Posted October 2, 2015 Hey everyone! So, I'm 3 days post op, and am still in some extreme pain. I know this is to be expected, but I feel like death right about now. I feel flu like, bronchitis, pneumonia all on top of having the surgery and my surgeon fixing a hiatal hernia that I had... What are some suggestions on things I should drink? I'm already trying to consume as much Water as possible without making myself sick, I'm sipping on some low sugar apple sauce as I write this, and I've tried sugar free Popsicles (which taste extremely different to me now that I've had the surgery). Did anyone have better luck with warm liquids? Like chicken broth? I want to make some, but at the same time I'm worried it's going to be even worse than the cold liquids I'm consuming. Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Daisee68 2,493 Posted October 2, 2015 Day 3 is a rough day after any surgery (not sure why but it has happened to me with every surgery I have had). Know that it will get easier over the next few days. I drank a lot of Swansons Beef broth (can't stand it now because I had it so much!) It was very tasty at that time though. Just don't make too much at once because it will get cold before you can drink it. OR get one of those coffee cup electric warmers and keep the cup on that and it will keep it warm for a while longer. hang in there!
kranky813 477 Posted October 2, 2015 Congratulations! If you haven't heard the first week is hell It gets so much better though! Sip, sip sip and walk, walk, walk. At first it was easier for me to drink hot things. Even hot Water was easier than cold. I would heat up Water and put lemon in it. As the previous poster said it gets cold quickly. I bought one of those mug warmer things that you plug into the wall to keep my mug of water/tea/broth hot. Worked for me. It seemed to sooth my insides. Now I have to drink Ice cold stuff. If it gets too warm I find I don't drink as much. I have 3 bottles of water in the fridge that I alternate between when one gets too warm for my taste. Try different temperatures and find out what works best for you. Hot and Cold aren't going to hurt you one bit.
cmauro0927 0 Posted October 2, 2015 This has helped me. I'm 2 days post opp and having trouble with the liquid diet, my doctor is giving me nausea meds to go home with

RILEYSMOM22 344 Posted October 2, 2015 Cold things seem to make my stomach spasm and result in much more gurgling sounds. I can drink warm broth quite easily.

dashofsunshine 875 Posted October 3, 2015 I lived on bouillon and Protein shakes for a month after surgery (only did the Protein Shakes because I had to...bouillon went down much easier, haha). One day I really wanted chicken noodle Soup, so I strained the liquid out and drank that so good. All this being said... Liquids sucks. It's not fun, nobody thinks it's fun, and you had major surgery. Your body is confused and pissed, lol. I was in a lot of pain for several days, had complications, etc. BUT stay the course. It will all be over soon. And it will become a distant memory and will be more worth it than anything else in your life.
