Kaiser - Pre-op weight loss

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! Congrats on all of your weight loss journeys. I'm just now beginning mine. I am going through Kaiser and haven't met with my surgeon yet. Does anyone know what weight Kaiser uses for the start weight? Do they use past visit weight or weight from the orientation? I'm just trying to plan out my diet and exercise plan before my surgeon gives me my pre-surgery weight loss goal. Do you know if Sacramento Kaiser goes by 10% like So Cal or do they have a different metric?

Thank you and good luck to you all!

I went through the So Cal Kaiser and they used the weight at the orientation, so it doesn't matter how much weight you lose before the classes. They would be happy if you lose the 10%, but they don't enforce. I didn't lose the 10% and still had the surgery. Best Wishes on your journey.

Congrats to both of you :)

I'm attending the seminar next Tuesday and then my doctor will refer me to a surgeon. In Northern CA, Kaiser doesn't require the Options courses. From what I've read, the surgeon will give me a weight loss goal and when I reach that goal, I can schedule the surgery. I'm just stressing about that, because I have issues losing weight.

That's true but depending on your starting weight it won't be much .. I followed the diet plan they give and exercised and my goal was 5 pounds each time you will be fine

I thought that I would not reach the 10% but I did. I lost 17 during the class and the remaining 6 while waiting for surgery.

My surgeon did not make me lose more and did not put me on a pre-op diet. His rule is just to not gain before the surgery, so hopefully I am good to go tomorrow morning for surgery. My scale says 197.

my initial weight was 401.5 and i was told i needed to lose 30 lbs (Kaiser Richmond- norCal). I just followed the eating plan they gave me and upped my exercise and it took me 2 months to reach goal (plus a few). I usually have a hard time losing weight, PCOS and hypothyroidism, but the eating plan is pretty low cal and low GI, which makes it hard to not lose weight. Once I hit goal, I got my appointment with the case manager... I meet her Tuesday to schedule surgery.

:) Don't stress the program. Don't try to get ahead of the program, since it is not a race. Just follow what they prescribe and be honest about what your are doing. The South Sac Kaiser is an extremely excellent program. I went through it and found my way, my voice, and my strength... I got what I needed and what I wanted by WLS and the many people who support WLS in the area.

:D If you do the exercising, go to the classes and group support, follow the Bariatric food list and Bariatric meal plans, daily Vitamins, chewing 30X for your foods, Portion Control and 64 ounces of Water (liquids) daily you will be successful... Sounds simple but it will take practice to really do it consistently.... and to be successful for the rest of your life... journey never ends.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
