Thoughts on Sugar free ice cream?

Recommended Posts

Got my family to switch from regular ice cream to sugar free...my question is...am I allowed to eat it too? Serving size is 1/2 c I think, but I doubt I could eat that much. I'm not worried about starting to crazy sweets, but occasionally I'd like a treat that I wouldn't be on my knees praying to the WLS powers to not let me gain weight!

NUT also told me turkey Jerky or beef jerky are good options, but I saw the sodium content and mentally ran screaming....thoughts on that??

For me personally, I think it would be the gateway portal to other bad things. The same way that I try and steer away from Protein Bars. Too much like candy bars for me. And I'm always afraid of the time when I can't stop at one.

If it's sugar free, why not???

Idk if we are actually allowed that, I don't see why not. Switching to sugar free EVERYTHING is quite an accomplishment itself. I'm gonna ; ) 1/2 cup factored into my day and calorie plan. Why not

one of the side effects of the sleeve for me was lactose intolerance. 1-2 bouts of horrible stomach cramps cured me of my ice cream cravings!

I think we each need to decide what "treats" we can afford without it triggering hunger or overeating. I was hardcore during weight loss phase because I had SO MUCH TO LOSE and wanted to get to my goal. I think plenty of people work in treats and still lose successfully. I dunno about sugar free, depends what the replacement is...

sugar free ice cream is not allowed on my plan. It triggers cravings and doesn't have a lot of nutritional value. For treats, I like full-fat Greek yogurt with PB2 stirred in, or dried fruit, or nuts like sweet & spicy pecans or sesame-honey almonds.

I don't do artificial sugars of any kind. The trade off is usually higher fat or a science project of chemicals. I have taken greek yogurt, added Protein Powder or fruit or nut butter in them and put it in the freezer until it got really thick like soft serve ice cream. We all have our thing we miss. This hits my craving for ice cream without derailing my eating.

sugar free ice-cream is on my list that is okay, but it states to check the fat & calories.

I always eat sugar free Popsicles.

Yeah sugar free stuff usually has a lot of carbs or fat in my experience. I just looked at Sugar free Reece's cups at Walgreens and carbs were ridiculous.

I avoided sugar free ice cream mainly because of the amount of carbs in it. I did try it once fairly early on and it made me terribly sick. After that I stuck to sugar free popsicles or Jello. :-)

I'll tell you why not:

* There's virtually no nutrition in that food -- and it's "expensive" for the calories that are in it (I'm guessing around 150 calories for a half-cup). That's a lot of calories. For 150 calories, you could eat more Protein, some very nutritious veggies and fruits, and even a little whole grain. The point to WLS is not just to lose weight any old way, but to get healthier. (I realize you may not care about this, but I did.)

* It indeed may be a gateway drug -- and lead to a second, third, fourth half-cup serving. .

* The sugar alcohols in there (that sweeten it) will give you diarrhea of the worst kind. Try eating two half-cups and see what happens. ;)

Best to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
