I think I'm doing something wrong

Recommended Posts

Ok I had my surgery 9/2014. I lost 44 lbs within the first 2 months and then nothing. I have had a fill every month since I was banded. I thought I had to go in every month. I have had times where I was good going in and after left with a fill was always hungry. He thought at one point had a leak but was wrong. My band right now has 5cc in it when I went in it had 4.5cc it seemed tighter then. I guess I still don't fully under stand it. I started out before surgery at 340 7/2013. when I had surgery I was 290. Now I have been stuck at 243 for a year. I thought by just having the band I would lose at least 100 lbs. now a I don't know when I will have my next fill. So just going with the flow. I have fallen back into the bad food choices. I guess I have maintained 240 for a year so it's not a complete failure.

I'm wondering if there are different size bands too Joanne. I just had a fill of 3cc and I had 3cc on my surgery day but I feel no more restriction than before my fill. I'm so hoping it gets better with the next fill because right now I can't even tell I'm banded.

Hi there, my surgeon doesn't share the amount of fill so I don't have that info (he says patients obsess), but I can tell you that I am some one who needed several fills to get to the green zone. I have also had a couple of small unfills in-between -- for me it's a nuancing process. As I've lost weight I've had a return of appetite and needed an adjustment. The links below in my signature are sources that help me understand how the band works -- it's all about dimming the appetite so we can make good choices. It doesn't keep us from eating naughty foods -- we have to do that ourselves. Being in the green zone enables that power over food for me -- I love having that appetite monster off of my back! Make sure your doctor is your partner in the process -- keep all your appointments. Best wishes!

You were banded in 2014 and have had a fill every month since?

How much does your Dr. put in each fill?

And are you paying $$ for each fill?

I cannot talk about you, I don't know you or your medical history...but I will share a story about someone I do know.

I was part of a support group early on....every one was moving ahead nicely....except one person whose Dr. would only give 1/2cc per fill per visit. After one year she was at a point where I was after 2 months and 2 fills.

And she was paying out of pocket for each visit per month.

Things did turn around for her after she got a new Dr.

Most bands today are the 10cc variety, some 14cc.....I never heard of a Dr. filling one to the maximum....

My Dr. was aggressive, or at least he made no doubt what the band can do and that his goal was to get it there so I can start the weight loss process.....I had 3 fills in 3 months, total 4 months after surgery,.....never had or needed a fill since.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
