I have a cautionary tale for you, my fellow post-surgery mates…

Last night I was in a hurry to get to my son's football game. I warmed up my dinner, a kinda pita pocket hamburger (it was a "diet" food, low carbs/sugars, etc., frozen section of Kroger)… I was excited because I am now allowed regular foods and this was the one of the first "regular" things I've eaten in over 6 weeks.

So! I. ate. too. fast :( Just as I was sitting down to watch my son's game, I felt it… a pain in my lower chest… some of my dinner was stuck. I did not chew well, like I know that I am supposed to do. It was so awful. I broke out in cold sweats and, though I could breath, could not stop gagging. I had to go to the parking lot, hide between cars, and vomit my saliva (heard it referred to as "the foamies"). After about the third time, a small piece of food came out. The piece was not anything that I would have had a problem with pre surgery… honestly, it was tiny by normal standards. Even after I threw it up, I continued to vomit saliva, that I was unable to swallow, for about another 5 minutes.

Following advice I found online (yes, many others have experienced this horrible experience, apparently), I have been on liquids only for 24 hours. From what I have read, no long term ill effects can be expected, but inflammation is common.

I knew I needed to take small bites and chew, chew, chew, but I became over confident and rushed too damn much…I've learned my lesson, for now! Hopefully, my own little post-bariatric surgery nightmare will help you guys remember the rules and avoid such an unpleasant (and scary) situation in the future.

No I haven't heard anything. I 'm so hoping he is alright! Ya the chili recipe has a lot of ingredients, hope you like it, let me know! I had a small episode of eating to fast talking on the phone & eating, just got to the stuck & uncomfortable. My husband has to tell me sometimes to slow down. I chew well but try to go back to eating to fast. I haven't weighed again but feel like I may have lost another 5 lbs. My scale is different than my dr.'s so I don't want to get discouraged. So If I'm right I have lost 10lbs since surgery day. Not alot, but way better than if I hadn't had the surgery plus not starving!!!

My doctor wanted me to wait 2 weeks, and I had refried Beans for the Protein at that time. Call your Nutritionist & see what they recommend.

Yea!!! Your not getting good sleep in the hospital, I was exhausted when I got home. You probably won't want to drink much when you get home either, you just have to make yourself. Have a safe trip home!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
