Gastric sleeve and birth control

Recommended Posts

So in my surgery bible the surgeon gave me it says I have to stop taking birth control 30 days before surgery. I called them to confirm I needed to do this because I am on nuvaring and wasn't sure if they just meant the pill or not. They told me I had to stop taking it a month before and could not take it again for a month after surgery. She told me an alternative would be to do the depo shot. I want to do it however it is expensive. Just wondering if anyone else was told the same thing and how they are handling. Also anyone on depo? Just curious how it is and what it costs? Someone help me!!

I will be in the same boat. I take the pill. It can cause blood clots so that's why we gotta stop. I think we can start it back within a week of surgery. Hopefully someone can help you with the shot question.

I had to stop mine 2 weeks before surgery and wasn't allowed to take the, again until a month after surgery. The reason for the stopping of birth control is the risk for blood clot formation after surgery. The birth control increases the risk even further. I started mine back a couple of weeks ago. I make sure to take them by themselves for the increase absorption and no interference with other things. Hope this helps!

I had to stop my birth control pills a week before and was able to resume a week after surgery.

Several years ago, I was on the depo shot. In addition to the actual cost of the drug, you will also need to make a doctor's appointment every three months to have a nurse give you the shot. They won't let you give it to yourself. When you pick up the prescription from the pharmacy, it will just be a vial, no syringe.

It also has a known side effect of large weight gain, so be aware of that as well.

I did depo years ago and it quickly put lots of weight on me. I don't recommend it. I have mirena & love it. I am going in this Thursday to have mine replaced actually because the one I have in now has been in for almost 5 years. Highly recommend mirena.

I wonder what is the difference between mirena & the copper IUD?

The copper IUD has no hormones and can last 10 years. Mirena has some hormones in it and lasts up to 5 years. I personally had a bad reaction to Mirena, but I don't think that is common.

I take bio-identical hormone creams. Since it's exactly what your body produces I'm hoping my doctor will let me keep taking them. I'm meeting with him tomorrow.

I second Mirena! I've had my IUD for about a year and a half now, no problems! It's wonderful.

I couldn't get the mirena placed due to pain. So now I'm back on the pill. Blegh. I was kind of distressed.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
