meganliz0824 65 Posted September 29, 2015 So in my surgery bible the surgeon gave me it says I have to stop taking birth control 30 days before surgery. I called them to confirm I needed to do this because I am on nuvaring and wasn't sure if they just meant the pill or not. They told me I had to stop taking it a month before and could not take it again for a month after surgery. She told me an alternative would be to do the depo shot. I want to do it however it is expensive. Just wondering if anyone else was told the same thing and how they are handling. Also anyone on depo? Just curious how it is and what it costs? Someone help me!!
MollyF22 62 Posted September 29, 2015 I will be in the same boat. I take the pill. It can cause blood clots so that's why we gotta stop. I think we can start it back within a week of surgery. Hopefully someone can help you with the shot question.
Hello new me 153 Posted September 29, 2015 I had to stop mine 2 weeks before surgery and wasn't allowed to take the, again until a month after surgery. The reason for the stopping of birth control is the risk for blood clot formation after surgery. The birth control increases the risk even further. I started mine back a couple of weeks ago. I make sure to take them by themselves for the increase absorption and no interference with other things. Hope this helps!
jmw1982 59 Posted September 29, 2015 I had to stop my birth control pills a week before and was able to resume a week after surgery. Several years ago, I was on the depo shot. In addition to the actual cost of the drug, you will also need to make a doctor's appointment every three months to have a nurse give you the shot. They won't let you give it to yourself. When you pick up the prescription from the pharmacy, it will just be a vial, no syringe. It also has a known side effect of large weight gain, so be aware of that as well. OutsideMatchInside 10,166 Posted September 29, 2015 Copper IUD.
Lexuskela 158 Posted September 29, 2015 I did depo years ago and it quickly put lots of weight on me. I don't recommend it. I have mirena & love it. I am going in this Thursday to have mine replaced actually because the one I have in now has been in for almost 5 years. Highly recommend mirena.
meganliz0824 65 Posted September 30, 2015 I decided against depo and will just stay with what I have. Thanks for all the input everyone!

Lexuskela 158 Posted October 1, 2015 I second the copper IUD. It's awesome:) I wonder what is the difference between mirena & the copper IUD?
fatcinderellasball 23 Posted October 1, 2015 The copper IUD has no hormones and can last 10 years. Mirena has some hormones in it and lasts up to 5 years. I personally had a bad reaction to Mirena, but I don't think that is common.
itstimealready 180 Posted October 1, 2015 I take bio-identical hormone creams. Since it's exactly what your body produces I'm hoping my doctor will let me keep taking them. I'm meeting with him tomorrow.
avRose 20 Posted October 3, 2015 I second Mirena! I've had my IUD for about a year and a half now, no problems! It's wonderful.
Tssiemer1 549 Posted October 3, 2015 I couldn't get the mirena placed due to pain. So now I'm back on the pill. Blegh. I was kind of distressed.
