Dehydration & Strictures

Recommended Posts

So I know it's VERY important to get 64 Oz of fluids in every day. I'm slowly trying to work my way up to this. As of now...I get about 50-55 oz in every day. Some days are better than others. My question is, how long before we can stop worrying about being re-hospitalized for dehydration? I know it's very common within the first week...but I have this fear it MAY happen if for some reason I only get 40 oz or even 30 oz in on one day? I'm 3 weeks & 4 days post op. I have no intention to stop drinking water...but it's just a worry. Another worry is a stricture? Do those only happen within the first weeks? Or can they happen even months down the line? Just some questions and again, I have every intention to follow my nutritionists rules...but these are questions that I'd like some input on. Thanks!

Strictures can happen at any time. I had a double stricture fresh from surgery and opted to let it work itself out on its own. That said...hydration is still an issue for me and i am 2 years post op.

Most people DON'T wind up in the hospital due to dehydration. Sip sip sip.... constantly

If you do get dehydrated, you can get IV fluids without being hospitalized.

Strictures are a fairly rare complication... does happen, but not something most of us dealt with.

Those early weeks are really tough... hang in there - it gets better!

Thank you!! I guess it's just the "fear of failing" because I've failed so many other times so I'm trying to be perfect and fully aware of what CAN happen. ya know what I mean? Good to know about the IV fluids...have you ever needed to go back in to have any IV fluids? How do we know if we're dehydrated? This was never a problem in the past. I could down 32 oz 6 times a day and be fine...now, not so much. :-P

@@VanessaVSGforme I didn't need IV fluids after I left the clinic, but I worked hard to make that happen. No guzzling, sip sip sip all day long. At first, I used a shot glass with a goal to finish it every 15 minutes and worked up from there. Actually, even long term, guzzling (and wolfing down food!) is really not a good idea with the sleeve, but you will be able to drink normally down the road.

We were all nervous and a little hyper paranoid in those early weeks - perfectly normal!
I have faith you will be just fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
